Smart Energy Management in Agriculture
Biomass Resources

Methane digestion offers an ideal solution to many issues in one integrated system. It can eliminate waste, turn it into a valuable fuel and fertilizer, and make for a cleaner operation all at the same time. Below you can find information on the basic mechanics of anaerobic digestion systems, the costs involved, potential energy return, and how to recieve funds available to help with design and installation costs.

Resources

ATTRA publishes a document entitled “Anaerobic Digestion of Animal Wastes” which contains information about using waste product to generate energy, uses and risks of the technology and its economic and enviornmetal benefits. The document also goes into design considerations and system costs.

In 2002 Eco-Farm put on a series of conferences on entitled “Innovations in Dairy Production” that brought together a group of ranchers, regulators and researchers to discuss a range of issues. The first week's conference topic was methane digesters and included information on how to generate enough electricity from a lagoon to fuel an entire dairy, the varying costs of installation, and the economics of digesters, as well as upcoming changes in utilities policy that will benefit electricity producing dairies. There was also a presentation on opportunities for receiving financial assistance from the state of California to developing manure methane power production projects. A panel of dairy producers with digesters in place described what made them make the shift, the process of application, installation, and operation. A synopsis of these proceedings is available. Take a look at the Overview of Methane Digestion and the information about the Dairy Power Production Program.
