Using less energy as good for the globe as it is for your pocketbook, and increasing energy efficiency is one of the simplest ways to reduce your energy needs. There are many way to increase the efiiciency of pumping, lighting, heating and cooling, and the savings can often quickly pay for the cost of investment. Find out more about how to do it, how much it will cost, and how to get money to help you implement energy efficient technologies.

Organizations & Resources

The California Energy Commission is the state's primary energy policy and planning agency. The CEC promotes energy efficiency through appliance and building standards, develops energy technologies and supports renewable energy. They provide market support to existing, new and emerging renewable technologies. The Commission helps Californians continue to have energy choices that are affordable, reliable, diverse, safe and environmentally acceptable.

Jim Thompson, a UC extension specialist for the CEC, has a list of Energy Saving Tips available online.

The CEC’s Energy in Agriculture Program has a wealth of resources related to increasing energy efficiency in agriculture.

ATTRA - National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service provides information and other technical assistance to farmers, ranchers, Extension agents, educators, and others involved in sustainable agriculture in the United States.

ATTRA has a publication available online entitled “Efficient Agricultural Buildings” which discusses several ways to improve the efficiency of agricultural buildings and provides further references for implementing those strategies.

The University of Wisconsin Extension produces a publication entitled “Energy Efficient Agricultural Lighting” which provides information to help determine if lighting is necessary and what types of lamps and fixtures are appropriate.

Flex Your Power is California's statewide energy efficiency marketing and outreach campaign. It is a partnership of California's utilities, residents, businesses, institutions, government agencies and nonprofit organizations working to save energy. The campaign includes retail promotions, a comprehensive website, an electronic newsletter, educational materials and advertising. Their website has a good agriculture section which has information on agricultural incentive programs, as well as free audits, classes and services.
