Sequencing the Soil Biome: The Future Is Here

The understanding of complex soil biology has taken a giant leap forward with the development of DNA sequencing. It is now possible to identify and quantify thousands of soil species, both beneficial and pathogenic. Trace Genomics has developed a tool to evaluate the crucial soil health metrics that influence crop yield. Quantifying good and bad microbes from diseased and non-diseased fields will help growers implement practices that control diseases and improve production. Biome Makers specializes in microbiological analysis of vineyards and the wine-making process. They have developed a method for assessing the unique microbial communities of vineyards to help growers with pathogen management. Their process is also developing the understanding of soil microbial communities and their influence on terroir.
