Hedgerows on Northern California Rangelands

Hedgerows can be planted on a wide diversity of agricultural landscapes. This workshop will discuss the details of how to design, install, and maintain a native plant hedgerow on working grazing lands. While the focus will be on Northern California, particularly in terms of plant choices, the lessons from this workshop are broadly applicable. Aspects to be covered will include: site selection; designing for particular benefits (pollinators and birds, cash crop plants, soil carbon sequestration, soil and livestock protection, ecosystem services); installation methods; weed management; pest exclusion and control; fencing; maintenance; and economic costs and benefits including new market opportunities. A speaker from the Xerces Society will discuss the critical importance of sourcing un-treated plant material  free of synthetic chemicals for riparian rangeland hedgerows. Following the presentation, there will be time for a Q&A session.
