Academic Coordinators are appointees who administer academic programs that provide service closely related to the teaching or research mission of the University. The duties of an Academic Coordinator are primarily administrative. Individuals in an Academic Coordinator title who are assigned research or instructional duties are required to hold a dual title.
This Academic Coordinator has primary responsibility for long-term planning, development, management and evaluation of academic programs related to the UC Davis Student Farm’s Market Garden (an educational production farm) and works closely with the Student Farm Director and Field Operations Coordinator to manage the teaching and research fields of the Student Farm. The Student Farm celebrates and values the UCD Davis Principles of Community as guiding principles for the work we do serving a diverse student body who bring their own unique perspectives, life experiences and academic interests.
The Market Garden is a 9 acre, CCOF certified organic mixed-vegetable farm built into the 23 acre UC Davis Student Farm and is used for experiential learning in organic production and related activities. The broader Student Farm includes a 1.5 acre Ecological Garden, 12.5 acres of teaching and research fields, a farm repair shop, tractors, and packing and storage areas. The Student Farm focuses on sustainable agriculture and food systems, emphasizes in-field experiential learning, and supports student exploration, creativity, initiative and leadership.
Each year the Student Farm engages over 300 students in staff- and faculty-mentored experiential learning. Students come to understand sustainability through the soils, crops, climate, and community in cropping and composting projects that range from garden to farm scale. The organic crops they grow for the campus community are sold through a 100 member CSA, to Dining Services and at the UCD Farmers Market, generating over $150,000 in annual revenue. Produce is also donated to UC Davis students through the campus Pantry, Basic Needs Center, Educational Opportunity Program and other resource centers. Teaching and research fields are currently used for Plant Science courses and research projects related to plant breeding and pollinator habitat. In addition to these efforts, the Student Farm is implementing an equity and inclusion plan and developing more culturally responsive programming as part of that plan.
The Student Farm is a unit with the Agricultural Sustainability Institute, which is housed under the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CA&ES). In addition to collaborations with students and faculty in CA&ES we also work with the College of Engineering, College of Letters and Sciences, and School of Education. The Student Farm sees itself as a community of learners working to build a more sustainable and just agricultural food system.
I Coordination of Academic Programs 80%
Academic Programming (20%)
i. Sets goals and priorities for educational programmatic activities for the Market Garden - including activities related to organic agriculture production, culturally relevant programming, and transferable skills development
ii. Communicates and coordinates with the Student Farm Director and Field Operations Coordinator to set goals for and manage the teaching and research fields,
iii. Programmatic activities include:
-in-field mentoring to student employees, interns, and visitors
-internships in the Market Garden organic agriculture production and the Fresh Focus food gleaning and donation program
-work with faculty to coordinate, develop and deliver field based programs for sustainable ag courses
iv. Develops strategies for achieving staffing, budgetary resources, facilities and equipment goals set together with Student Farm director
v. contributes to grant proposals and other fundraising efforts related to the Market Garden and teaching and research fields
Market Garden Management (60%)
i. Manages all aspects of the 9 acre in-field teaching, production and research laboratory including:
-Coordinating with other permanent staff, especially the field-operations coordinator
-Supervising and mentoring up to 15 student employees and 40 interns per quarter on organic production methods, CSA, farmers market stand, and Dining Service sales management. The majority of students who participate in internships have none or little farming and gardening experience.
-Coordinating, managing and maintaining all lands, facilities, financial resources, tools, supplies and activities and Farmer’s Market, and retail sales to Dining Services
-Maintaining good records and organic certification
-Working with the Director of the Student Farm and the Field Operations Manager to maintain, improve and expand facilities and equipment used in educational programs.
-Working with the Director of the Student Farm to develop a budget and fundraise for Market Garden programs.
a. year-round production of organic crops, primarily vegetables, herbs, and tree crops, and marketing these crops to campus customers;
b. supervising and assisting in the management of plots used by instructors of courses and students conducting experiments;
c. supervising undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in courses, conducting research, completing internships or working as paid employees.;
d. supervising temporary employees
II. University and Public Service 15%
i. Provides informal, in-field instruction in the practical knowledge and skills used in organic crop, soil, water and pest management, as well as crop planning, harvesting, post-harvest handling, marketing and sales. Field-based instruction includes discussion of the principles and theories underlying the sustainable agricultural practices. These principles and theories will be based on sustainable science materials for organic production that have been developed by the Academic Coordinator. These materials will be used in instructional courses and be generally available to student and non-student clients.
ii. Participate in Agricultural Sustainability Institute and UCD committee(s) related to sustainable agriculture and food systems
iii. Conduct outreach to growers, gardeners, UC Cooperative Extension/Agriculture and Natural Resources (UCCE and UCANR), and the general public in Northern California to assist in disseminating information on sustainable production practices.
iv. Plan and implement field days to disseminate results of research and trials at the Student Farm, as well as demonstrate sustainable agricultural production practices in the Market Garden at the Student Farm.
III. Professional Competence and Activity 5%
i. Engage in various professional activities related to organic farming and sustainable agriculture education such as participating in professional meetings, presenting posters or papers at conferences, and publishing related works.
ii. Engage in professional development trainings related to creating inclusive and culturally relevant learning environments and serving underrepresented students, especially in agricultural fields.
• Hold a Master’s degree in a natural science, agriculture, education, or related area by the time the position starts.
• 2 years of experience managing all aspects of an organic farm, including crop planning and production, marketing and sales, personnel supervision, equipment operation, budgeting, organic certification.
• Hold or acquire a pesticide applicators license within 60 days of being hired.
• Knowledge and experience developing and maintaining a safe farm working environment, including an understanding of food safety rules.
• Experience facilitating a team approach with shared leadership, decision-making, and management, particularly with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience in facilitating experiential learning in sustainable agriculture and food systems, teaching and mentoring students, and supporting student agency, initiative, and empowerment.
• Demonstrated strong communication skills, including speaking, listening, and writing.
• Experience and cultural competency working in diverse environments and experience developing programming for and with diverse and multiracial audiences.
• Demonstrated commitment to creating and maintaining, working and learning environments which are inclusive, diverse and welcoming.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds including students, faculty and the public.
• Skills to facilitate group processes and to foster open dialogue, collaboration, and problem solving.

• 5 years experience managing all aspects of a 7 acre or larger diversified organic farm – including crop planning and production, marketing and sales, personnel supervision, equipment operation, budgeting, organic certification.

Initial appointment will be 100% for one year term renewable based on performance. This position is a term appointment and following the first positive merit advancement, appointments will normally be renewed on a two year basis.
