Job Title:
Advanced Farming Apprenticeship at Fry Family Farm with Rogue Farm Corps
Rogue Farm Corps
Medford, OR
Job Type:
Internship
Employment Type:
Full-Time
Job Description:

Suzi and Steve Fry started farming in the Rogue Valley in 1990. Originally a couple acres on Wagner Creek Road in Talent, they have expanded over the years and now have more than 90 acres of certified organic crops in production at several farms sites in Medford, Phoenix, Talent and Ashland. Each offers a slightly different climate and soil type providing a perfect ground for our vegetable, fruit, flower, and plant starts. Suzi and Steve’s daughters grew up working on the farm, and a couple of them have returned now as adults to help run the farm. Growing food organically in a healthy environment, stewarding the land, and contributing to their community remain important values for the family.

Duties & Responsibilities:

We are expecting our apprentice to work a 40hr week M-f or T-Sat. Days start earlier depending on the time of year and weather (heat). We understand that time off is important and offer one week off for the first year apprentices, to be scheduled ahead of time during the season.
We intend to provide instruction by working alongside the participants. We feel like the apprentices will be best served by working/training with a supervisor who knows each task at the farm best, so apprentices will rotate who they are training with, depending on the tasks at hand. As apprentices become proficient at tasks, they will take on more responsibility and work independently at times.
We are very lucky to have a team of managers at the farm that have all been working together for 10+ years. We work together to educate and mentor all our employees, and plan to take that same approach with apprentices. Apprentices will learn from experts that we have in all of the different experiences of farming we have to offer. Amber Fry will serve as the main mentor to oversee the overall apprenticeship experience and help to guide participants in the direction of their interests.
Apprentice can expect to gain deeper knowledge and competency in the following areas:
Greenhouses: seeding, planting, soil mixing
Farm: planting, cultivating, harvesting, watering, processing, packing
Sales: farmers markets, farm store, CSA, deliveries

Education & Experience:

The core of the Apprenticeship programs is hands-on learning experience. The vast majority of your time will be spent learning by doing. You will train alongside your mentor and independently to develop skills while accomplishing daily tasks that move your host farm along through the season.
Rogue Farm Corps works closely with farm mentors to provide you with a skill-based curriculum that is unique to your host farm. Our Chapter Coordinators will conduct formal on-site evaluations with apprentices and host farmers to ensure that your education and training goals are being met.
In addition to the hands-on training provided by the host farm, apprentices will attend a series of classes, farm tours, workshops, and discussion circles facilitated by RFC and collaborators. Visit https://www.roguefarmcorps.org/programs for more information.

Application Instructions:
