About Growing Leaders

Our mission at Growing Leaders is to use the garden and kitchen as tools to nourish college and career readiness and professional development for young people. Our gardening and cooking programs at Willard Middle School include 6th grade gardening and cooking classes, a 7th and 8th grade business elective, after school class, and a teen summer employment program.
The AmeriCorps member will assist with:

6th grade cooking and gardening: 6th grade classes alternate time in the garden and kitchen, learning about seasonality, nutrition, ecology, food systems, and how to make responsible food choices. Garden teachers lead groups of 8 to 10 students working or cooking in the garden.
The Growing Leaders 7th and 8th grade business elective is an innovative new job skills program in which students grow, cook, and sell bimonthly meals to the community and general public. They get hands-on experience in all aspects of running a small business--from product development and pricing, to marketing.
