The Beginning Farm and Ranch Management Apprenticeship, a program of the Center for Land-Based Learning, trains individuals for farm management jobs by providing practical experience, valuable skills, and connections to a mentor that will allow you to gain more responsibility on a farm and move into a management role.
The program lasts approximately two years and combines paid on-the-job training with job-related instruction, providing a structured way to gain skills and knowledge. Apprentices work full-time on a production farm with a farmer mentor, gaining experience in the major areas needed to manage a successful farm, and also complete coursework to support their on-farm learning.
The Beginning Farm and Ranch Management Apprenticeship is a Veterans Administration-approved training program; eligible veterans may receive their VA education assistance benefits to supplement their apprenticeship wages.

Duties and responsibilities will vary between farm locations. However, all apprentices will work at least 3,000 hours on the farm and will gain experience in each of the eight work process areas (available on our website). Apprentices will be full time employees and should expect 5-6 days each week, with longer days during busy periods on the farm.
Additionally, all apprentices will complete 250 hours of coursework, a mix of core classes and individualized coursework.
Farming experience is not required for this position, but is highly encouraged; applicants with agriculture experience (and/or other transferable skills) will have more competitive applications. Apprentices must be age 18 or older, be eligible to work in the United States, have a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, and have a valid U.S. Driver's License.
