Job Description:

We are an established small/mid-scale diversified farm outside of Portland, Oregon entering our 9th season. We focus on organic, annual vegetable production for direct-to-consumer and a slowly growing list of wholesale customers. We vend at 3 farmer’s markets per week, a small on-site farm stand, and sell to restaurants and school districts. We are a small team that work closely together on a daily basis to grow high quality, organic produce for our customers. We’re passionate about our craft and value hard work, sweat, sore muscles, but most importantly, work/life balance.

We are seeking an experienced farmer to join our team in the Spring of 2022. This is a full-time leadership position that will support the farm owner and manager (Jennifer and Matt) to oversee daily operations, manage the farm crew, outreach to new potential wholesale customers, assist with crop and field planning, and the operation of farm equipment and machinery.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Manage and oversee daily operations of farm crew, including interns, apprentices, and/or field staff.

Manage field operations, including planting, harvest, weed management, nutrient management, crop rotations and successions, pest management.

Assist Farm Manager in tractor operations, including field preparation, tillage, mechanical harvest, maintenance, etc.

Assist Farm Manager in marketing duties, including new customer outreach, social media posts, and customer management.

Assist Farm Manger in maintaining farm equipment and systems, including irrigation systems, propagation greenhouse, hightunnels, wash/pack, walk-in coolers, tractor and implements, etc.

Assist farm crew in day to day tasks when possible.

Education & Experience:

At least 2 years full-time experience working on a production farm with an emphasis on crop production.

A strong understanding of crop production, including all steps from crop planning, propagation, planting, cultivation, disease/pest and nutrient management, and harvest.

A strong understanding of field management, including crop rotations, cover cropping, tillage, cultivation (mechanical and hand).

A strong understanding of processing, including all steps in the wash/pack, food safety, and sorting complex orders.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience running a business

Experience managing staff or volunteers

Farm management experience

Experience managing staff in a kitchen/food service environment

Experience operating and maintaining a tractor and farm implements.

Desired Personal Traits:

Excellent communication. This position will need to communicate clearly and respectfully within a small, tightly knit team, including setting and upholding clear expectations of quality and efficiency.

Strong attention to detail. This is a leadership position and will be setting the standard for the rest of the crew. While speed and efficiency is certainly important, this position will require a higher level attention to detail to ensure our quality standards are met and communicated with the rest of the crew.

Excellent organizational skills. Farms are complicated beasts and without a solid system of organizing tasks or other items, can be absolutely overwhelming. You will need to develop your own organizational systems and also work within the farm’s existing systems.

Schedule:

We are looking to hire a position as soon as March 15th. This position will be full time (average 40hrs/week) during our primary season from March through November, then part time (20hrs/week) from December through February, with flexibility in the winter months for extended time off.

Hours are typically 8am to 5pm with an hour for lunch, however some flexibility is required as the seasonal nature of farming may require more than 8 hour days during peak season, and less than 8 during the shoulder seasons.

Compensation is $18-20/hr. depending on experience.

Application Instructions:

Please reach out to us at quackenbushfarm@gmail.com if interested, with a copy of your resume, at least 3 references, and a cover letter summarizing your interest in the position and how your experience relates to it.
