This is a unique farm full-time position responsible for the operation of our market garden produce farm site (9.34 acres) located in Saginaw Township, MI. The Assistant Farm Manager will be co-responsible for the operations of Brandt Farm Company’s produce farm in partnership with owners and operators. Planning and transitioning vegetable produce for sales to the market side of the business and supervision/coordination of staff (and potentially volunteers) will be primary focus. This position requires dedication and skill in growing following organic practices, intensive growing techniques, interacting with people from many different backgrounds, personal and professional maturity, creativity, and commitment to the vision and mission of Brandt Farm Co. This is a full-time, year-around positions, with flexible scheduling.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Farming Duties
• Assist with crop plan and planting schedule and succession management in green house, hoop house, and open fields to support a weekly farmers market and on-site farm stand and provide education activities to develop agricultural tourism.
• Develop and execute an organic pest management and disease control plan.
• Lead the day-to-day operation of the farm.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of farm production and progress.
• Utilize sustainable and organic agriculture methods, including weed management, integrated pest management, and develop of soil structure through composting.
• Purchase materials/supplies for the operation of the farm
• Maintain food safety compliance and standards.
• Collaborate with the Brandt Farm Co Market and work with the retail to market, place produce, herbs and other plants grown on the farm at Brandt Farm Co to move product. Position includes working on an upcoming online farm stand, and finding potential wholesale buyers as the business grows.
PROGRAM LEADERSHIP AND SUPPORT
• Lead other employees at the farm by instructing them on daily goals, training on tasks and supervision of workers and projects.
• Work in partnership with retail on advertising, and record-keeping.
• Ensure safety of employees at the farm by teaching safety techniques and following best practices.
• Maintain social media presence and work with retail to post weekly updates on the farm.
• Support the outreach work of Brandt Farm Company- help us connect with the community. Develop hands on farm programs such as special event tours or programs, school field trips, and/or after-school programs.
ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT
• Engage with staff, neighbors, & program participants to build community relationships.
• Update inventory or other farm related info on Brandt Farm Co website.
• Prepare farm reports for tax purposes, audits and grant reporting.
• Represent Brandt Farm Co at community meetings and other outreach efforts.
• Cultivate relationships within the market farm agriculture network in Michigan and local food systems communities.
CANDIDATES WILL EXHIBIT:
• Three years of farming experience, organic practice market gardening farming required, including some experience in a leadership role. Experience with hoop house/greenhouse cultivation.
• Bachelor’s Degree in a program linked to organic growing practices preferred; experience may substitute for desired credentials.
• Commitment to sustainable and organic practices including weed, pest and water management.
• Experience working with produce retail and generation of sales of produce.
• Business planning and vegetable crop planning experience.
• Willingness to do physical labor in all weather.
• Ability to lift 50lbs.
• Basic carpentry skills, equipment maintenance skills, a plus.
• Flexibility to work non-traditional hours, including evening and weekends as scheduled.
• A commitment to keep our space clean and tidy and an understanding of the challenges of working within a multi-purpose space in a market farm environment.
• Experience teaching/training new staff in a farm or outdoor setting
• Highly competent in use of computers and technology on a daily basis.
• Experience with and dedication to data collection and reporting.
• Dedication to working as a member of and in partnership with diverse communities.
• Willingness to adapt to changing organizational conditions and limited resources.
• Experience in a community-based organization is a plus.
• Clean background check, driving record, and valid driver’s license will be required.
