Program Description:
The Ecology Center is actively working to create and promote an alternative, local, food system that is based on the values of environmental protection, justice, and access to healthy, sustainably produced food for all. The Ecology Center’s Berkeley Farm Stand (Farm Fresh Choice) aims to promote the Ecology Center’s three farmers’ markets and their vendors; create greater access to healthy, locally-grown produce; and provide job training and environmental and social justice literacy opportunities to Ecology Center Youth Scholars and Staff.

Summary of Responsibilities:
The Berkeley Farm Stand Program Associate is responsible for the coordination, set-up and break-down of the Ecology Center’s community produce stands. Responsibilities include farm stand operation and promotion, including purchase of produce, set-up and break-down of stand, instructing youth and volunteers on-site, community outreach, sales, and deposit preparation. The Program Associate also works as an Assistant Farmers’ Market Manager at the Ecology Center’s three Berkeley farmers’ markets on an as-needed basis.

This position is 75% time, approximately 30 hours per week.

Starting hourly rate is $15.00 to $17.21, commensurate with experience and qualifications. (Please note that only internal candidates are eligible for the highest starting pay rate.) This position is eligible for benefits which include fully vested 401K plan, vacation/sick/holiday pay, Employee Assistance Program and paid employee medical, dental, and optional vision plan. Benefits pro-rated at 75 percent FTE.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Assist Program Manager in developing Program work-plan and goals, in accordance with program objectives and the Ecology Center mission and strategic plan.
Assist Program Manager in executing work-plan, goals, and objectives associated with the Ecology Center’s Berkeley Farm Stands.
Perform and support all duties related to operating Ecology Center Berkeley Farm Stands, including set-up, breakdown, and operation of daily and weekly produce stands; Coordination with farmers’ market staff and farmers to procure weekly purchase of produce for produce stand.
Provide excellent customer service through customer interactions selling produce, bagging produce, and answering questions.
Work with Program Manager to plan and execute outreach within surrounding neighborhoods and at community events to promote stand and farmers’ market awareness and participation.
Provide general instruction to and oversight for any youth interns or volunteers working on site at produce stand or in the office.
Ensure that all market monies received are handled safely following established
cash-handling procedures; assist in the preparation of deposits within 24 hours of receipt of funds.
Prepare and submit invoices to Finance Department within one week of produce purchase.
Clean and maintain farm stand sites and vehicle, tools, and equipment.
Answer FFC phone and respond to emails during office hours.
Attend any necessary meetings and trainings with Ecology Center staff and youth interns.
Occasionally fill in as an on-site Assistant Farmers’ Market Manager at the Ecology Center’s three Berkeley farmers’ markets.
Ensure that program staff, youth interns and volunteers observe safe operating practices and comply with organizational safety policies.
Maintain familiarity with, follow, and ensure staff compliance with all Ecology Center policies and procedures in the performance of daily duties.
Perform other duties as assigned

Proven ability to work independently and exercise good judgment in a variety of environments and situations.
Passionate about working to build sustainable and equitable food systems; knowledge of farmers’ markets or California sustainable agriculture.
Competency with word processing, spreadsheet, database and graphic computer applications in a Mac computer environment.
Cultural competencies to effectively work with Latino and African American youth and communities.
Strong verbal and written communications skills.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Must possess a current CA driver’s license and provide evidence of insurance
First Aid and CPR Certification (or willingness to become certified)
Ability to work outdoors in any weather and regularly lift, carry, and/or move up to twenty five (25) pounds and occasionally lift, and/or move up to 50 pounds

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma/GED
One year of prior work experience

Preferred Qualifications:
Spanish language fluency preferred
