This is a unique farming experience in gorgeous Southern Oregon where you will learn the inner workings of three different farm enterprises: Seven Seeds Farm (seed focus), Flora Farm (cut flower and flower seed focus), and Siskiyou Seeds (bioregional seed company). The experience will include work at two different farm locations in Williams: one a large, 40-acre farm with fields, forest, ponds and creeks, the other a 4-acre rural suburban property with field and forest. Both are within 3 miles of downtown Williams, a 30 minute drive from Grants Pass, and a 1-hour drive from Ashland.
Both Seven Seeds Farm and Flora Farm are certified organic farms that use biodynamic stewardship practices. Seven Seeds has 4-6 acres under cultivation and grows a large diversity of annual field crops such as vegetables, herbs, grains, legumes and flowers to full maturation so that these plants are harvested for their seeds. Intermixed with fields crops are perennial tree and shrub hedgerows which offer fruit, berries, nuts, and seed for farm livestock, for sale, and for on-farm consumption. Farm animals rotationally graze through annual fields to provide tillage and manure. In addition, soil is prepared for planting with the application of compost and tractor tillage. Crops are planted, tended and harvested by hand. Seeds are processed using low-tech hand cleaning methods and simple machinery.
Stacey grows annual and perennial flower and foliage crops for her floral design business at both Seven Seeds and Flora Farm. About 1 acre is in production at Flora Farm, with permanent plantings of shrubs and trees in hedgerows providing additional harvest materials on the periphery of the field crops. Soil is prepared for planting with the application of farm-made compost and beds are prepped through a combination of till and no-till methods.
Farming is a big undertaking and expectations of apprentices include: 4 days per week of hands-on farm work Mon-Thur; 7-10 hour days depending on the season; 15 min. per day of mini-trainings; heavy physical exertion with weeding and other farm tasks; timeliness and clear communication; days off Fri-Sun; one year previous farming experience for apprentices and required to attend Saturday Grants Pass Growers Market.
The core of the Internship and Apprenticeship programs is hands-on learning experience. The vast majority of your time will be spent learning by doing. You will train alongside your mentor and independently to develop skills while accomplishing daily tasks that move your host farm along through the season.
Rogue Farm Corps works closely with farm mentors to provide you with a skill-based curriculum that is unique to your host farm. Our Chapter Coordinators will conduct formal on-site evaluations with interns and host farmers to ensure that your education and training goals are being met.
In addition to the hands-on training provided by the host farm, interns and apprentices will attend a series of classes, farm tours, workshops, and discussion circles facilitated by RFC and collaborators. Visit https://www.roguefarmcorps.org/programs for more information.
Seven Seeds is a host farm in the Rogue Farm Corps Internship and Apprenticeship Programs. The RFC Internship Program is a full season entry-level residential program combining hands-on training and skills-based education in sustainable agriculture. As an intern, you will live and train full-time on a host farm, receiving up to 1,500 hours of on-farm training and learning in-depth skills from your mentor. Your residential farm training experience is combined with farm tours, classes, and discussion circles throughout the region, as well as opportunities for independent study. Interns are exposed to a vast array of knowledge and expertise by engaging in the daily life of vibrant, agricultural communities.
The Apprenticeship Program is an advanced on-farm program combining hands-on training and skills-based education for those seeking mastery in the art and business of sustainable agriculture. This full-immersion program is designed for those who have completed RFC's Internship Program, or have two years of on-farm experience. You will live and train full-time on a host farm, receive up to two seasons of on-farm training, and learn in-depth skills from your mentor farmer. See details below or visit our website at https://www.roguefarmcorps.org for more info on the program.
