Job Description: 

Pennsylvania Certified Organic (PCO) announces a job opening for a Certification Specialist. The Certification Specialist serves as the primary contact between PCO and our certified organic clients. This position focuses on assessing and determining compliance with the operation’s organic system plan with organic regulations, evaluating inspection reports and writing/issuing reports to clients, providing customer service, and working collaboratively within the Certification Review Team. If qualified and interested, Certification Specialists may also conduct inspections. This position is primarily remote office-based with some minimal travel exceptions. The ideal candidate will have education and or experience in the following areas: familiarity with regulatory compliance and organic certification, knowledge of organic standards, agriculture and food science/processing, and organic/regulatory inspections. We are looking for a well-organized and self-motivated person to join our team-oriented environment at PCO. This is a full remote telecommuting position.

PCO is a growing non-profit organization that works with organic farmers and food producers across the US. PCO provides organic certification services to approximately 1700 operations and employs 34 staff and sub-contracts with 40 field inspectors. Our team is dedicated to our mission: to ensure the integrity of organic products and serve our farming community.

This is a full-time, exempt, Telecommute position.

Salary range: $47,500 to $58,000, depending on experience.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Certification Review Process
• Review member certification applications, inspection reports, and supporting documentation and determine compliance status, as assigned by the supervisor
• Provide information to persons requesting organic certification and respond to requests for information about PCO
• Serve as the primary contact person for clients assigned by the supervisor
• Provide evaluative feedback on inspectors
Certification Policy & Procedure
• Support the development and maintenance of certification forms and documents
• Assist with Standards Committee work and attend meetings, as requested by the team
leader
• Maintain an understanding of the USDA National Organic Program regulations, as well
as PCO policy and procedures
• Implement certification policies and procedures

Compliance and Enforcement
• Monitor continued compliance monthly
• Track all outstanding non-compliances
• Monitor compliance conditions received
• Write notifications of noncompliance
• Work with Staff Accountant to track unpaid fees
• Work with Certification Program Manager to respond to rebuttals and appeals of adverse
certification decisions
• Participates in audits and accreditation site visits, as requested by the team leader

Other
• Assist with Certification Committee work and attend meetings
• Participate in Certification Team meetings
• Conduct inspections of operations requesting certification, as assigned by the team
leader
• Ensure the avoidance of conflict of interest throughout the certification process and update the PCO Conflict of Interest form on an annual basis at a minimum
• Assist Certification Director and Certification Program Manager in the performance of their duties
• Serving as a representative of PCO in relevant industry areas as appropriate, and role modeling diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Represent PCO at public events, as needed

Education & Experience: 

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, preferably in agriculture, biology, environmental studies, or food science.
• Familiarity with regulatory compliance
• Knowledge of organic standards and regulations
• Familiarity with the certification procedure
• Excellent organizational skills
• Attention to detail
