The California Climate & Agriculture Network (CalCAN) is looking for a Development & Communications Manager who is passionate about agriculture, the environment and social justice, who understands the power of communications to influence policy change, and who is ready to join us at a dynamic time when the imperative to tackle climate change has never been more urgent. The primary responsibility of the Development & Communications Manager is to tell the story of agriculture’s unique and powerful role in addressing climate change and of CalCAN’s impact on climate and agriculture policy. They develop and manage our strategic communications with partners, policymakers and funders. They also assist the Executive Director with grant writing, reporting and tracking, and with internal communications and operations.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

The Manager reports to the Executive Director and works collaboratively as a member of our seven-member team.

Strategic Communications
• Work with staff to develop and implement effective communications goals, plans, and strategies, with an emphasis on translating complex climate and agriculture policy issues for lay audiences and on amplifying farmer and other grassroots voices
• Maintain and continually improve all online communications tools (website, newsletter, and blogs)
• Manage social media and generate content aligned with policy objectives
• Coordinate production of blogs, policy reports, fact sheets and white papers
• Manage contacts databases for CalCAN network members and media
• Cultivate traditional media contacts and work with the Executive Director and Policy Director on media talking points, press releases, and media pitches
• Monitor and analyze CalCAN’s communications reach

Fundraising & Development
• Support the Executive Director with grant proposal and report writing to foundations, tracking organizational accomplishments, and foundation database management
• Prepare and manage accurate and timely entry and tracking of all donor and funder data, correspondence, contacts and deadlines
• Build and maintain funder prospect lists

Administration & Operations
• Provide support to the CalCAN team as needed on technology tools (Zoom, Google Workspace, WordPress, etc.)
• Provide additional administrative support to the Executive Director as needed
• Collaborate on large organizational events such as lobby days and CalCAN’s biennial Climate and Agriculture Summit

Team Building
• Participate in weekly all-staff meetings and social justice trainings and discussions
• Collaborate on organizing coalition, advisory council meetings, and annual retreats
• Contribute to a collaborative organizational culture that attracts, engages, motivates, and retains a diverse, highly qualified and effective team and network
• Play a constructive leadership role in CalCAN’s growth and development, and the continual honing of the organization’s strategies and framing

Education & Experience: 

• Demonstrated interest in and familiarity with sustainable agriculture, and a passion for the power of strategic communications to influence policy
• Commitment to social justice and an analysis of how to apply it within the context of agriculture and climate campaigns
• Applied experience utilizing strategic communications tactics in an advocacy setting
• Minimum of two years’ experience with grant proposal and report writing
• Facility with a variety of technology platforms including social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Hootsuite), contact management (MailChimp), website (WordPress, Google Analytics) and graphic design software (Canva)
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills
• Self-directed, entrepreneurial and collaborative work style
• Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects in the face of quickly changing legislative schedule and deadlines
