Job Description: 

The Sustainability and Edible Education Coordinator offers leadership, support, and coordination to teachers and students to ensure TKS maximizes the K-12 learning potential of garden and plant science. The coordinator will oversee the development of materials that integrate the principles of Edible Education into core academic subjects. The incumbent will work in collaboration with TKS teachers, administrators, university students, faculty and staff on the integration of the Edible Education program at TKS and the Plant sciences department and the Center for Desert Agriculture at the University.

The Edible Education Coordinator supports the learning of students around topics of environmental sustainability through curricular development and learning activities. Additionally, the Coordinator manages utilization of the School Garden to ensure that teachers are informed about the resources, and schedules regular use to maximize learning opportunities.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Works collaboratively with the PYP, MYP, and DP coordinators in curriculum development to integrate the school garden and the sustainable development goals into multiple units from KG-12.

Works collaboratively with classroom teachers (K-12) to develop lessons that support classroom teaching in a range of curriculum areas to increase students’ hands-on experiences in the garden (science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, etc.) while promoting the understanding of sustainability.

Promotes environmental sustainability and acts as a champion of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Identifies and reports garden needs (materials, signage, tools, planting beds, etc.).

Facilitates the planting, maintenance, and harvest plan for the annual garden season(s) with a primary goal to maximize student participation.

Builds involvement in and commitment to the school garden within the school community, among students, teachers, parents, administrators and university personnel.

Builds teacher capacity through professional development, coaching and/or co-teaching to develop classroom teacher skills in the use of the garden.

Schedules use of the garden and ensures that tools and other necessary materials are available.

Monitors, documents, and reports on all activities and extent of student and teacher participation in the garden to the Director of Learning and Innovation.

Uses available resources to communicate activities, events, and successes of the garden to the KAUST community.

Collaborates with the Office of TKS/KAUST engagement in exploring and developing opportunities for student learning experiences with a variety of community organizations and university departments.

Coordinates after school garden activities and coordinates events to connect to garden related initiatives.

Coordinates with the Operations Manager to ensure proper horticulture support is organized and attending to the needs of a healthy and well-functioning school garden

Education & Experience: 

University degree in education (or related field) required.
Three years of facilitation and/or teaching experience.
Management of youth in outdoor settings preferred.
Knowledge and skills in small-scale organic food production.
Knowledge of project-based learning preferred
Experience with IB curriculum preferred
Previous international experience preferred
