Job Description: 

BAYAC AmeriCorps collaborates with over 20 agencies in over 70 schools and community-based organizations to serve youth and families in the San Francisco Bay Area. As part of AmeriCorps, BAYAC Members commit to a full-time (40 hours/week) term of service in the Bay Area's most high-need communities, working to provide youth with opportunities for meaningful engagement, skill building, and emotional and social development. This is a paid work experience program for folks who are looking to advance their career working with youth and in the field of education. We are hiring folks to serve as after-school educators, classroom aides, academic coaches & mentors, tutors, health educators, case managers, and enrichment activities coordinators.

In particular, we are looking to fill Environmental Educator positions at sites such as Bishop O’Dowd High School. Bishop O’Dowd High School is a coeducational, college preparatory Catholic High School located in Oakland. O’Dowd is a unique community, rich in cultural and socioeconomic diversity. The educational mission of O’Dowd is rooted in Catholic heritage so that students will graduate prepared and dedicated to building a moral, environmentally sustainable, socially just and peaceful world. One of the things that makes O’Dowd unique is its robust sustainability programs and 4-acre garden/outdoor classroom space. The Americorps Member will be working directly with their sustainability programs.

We are also looking to fill Garden Educator positions at our following partner sites in the East Bay: Growing Leaders at Willard Middle School, Edible Schoolyard and Longfellow Middle School. We are also looking to fill Garden Educator positions in San Francisco with San Francisco Community School.

Position duties may include:

Implement garden education curriculum and maintain the sites’ gardens
Inspire young people to care about sustainability issues
Support students/youth in developing the skills they need to be successful in school and life
Provide homework and academic support for program participants at school sites
Provide case management, referrals, and independent living skills for clients at community based sites
Plan and facilitate youth focused lesson plans and activities
Promote a safe and positive learning environment
Actively supervise and ensure student/youth safety at all times
Model positive attitudes, behaviors, and language
Communicate regularly with the site coordinator and regional supervisor
Maintain accurate attendance records and reporting procedures
Attend and participate in weekly training and cohort meetings

Develop basic teaching skills, including curriculum development, behavior management practices and public speaking/facilitation

Qualifications:

U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a lawful permanent resident of the United States
At least 17 years old
High School Diploma or GED
Ability to work full-time (40 hours/week) and commit to an 8-month term of service
Successful completion of TB test and Live Scan/fingerprinting (upon hire)
Prefer to have 48 college credits completed
Prefer bilingual in Spanish/English, not required

Timeline: Service cohorts begin August 21, 2019 and serve until July 2020 for 1700-hour members.

* AmeriCorps members that successfully complete a Full-time 1700 hour service term approved through FY 2019 AmeriCorps State funding will be eligible to receive a combined $10,000 AmeriCorps Education Award ($6,095 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award and $3,905 California For All Education Award). Members may use the education award to pay for current educational expenses at an eligible institution, to repay qualified student loans, or to do both.
