About the Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust
The Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust (MBFT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to advance the social, economic, and environmental sustainability of Monterey Bay fisheries. Since 2014, MBFT has partnered with the commercial fishing industry, local government, and conservation organizations to achieve a balance between a healthy ocean ecosystem and a healthy seafood economy. Our programs aim to (1) strengthen and grow a local, sustainable seafood movement in the Monterey Bay region, (2) support stakeholder engagement in conservation and management, (3) strengthen the viability and resilience of local seafood businesses, and (4) provide healthy seafood to community members in need while supporting the local fishing economy. The team at MBFT currently includes two full-time staff and ten or more contractors at any given time. Governed by a six-person Board of Directors, and supported by a dedicated community of funders and donors, MBFT currently has an annual budget of $530K.

Position Summary:
MBFT seeks a dynamic and professional executive director (ED) to oversee the operations, programs, staffing, and execution of MBFT’s mission. The ED will be responsible for leveraging funding to lead the organization through a period of growth and build a team to effectively deliver on its mission. Toward this end, MBFT seeks an experienced and inspirational leader who can motivate, build, and execute thoughtful and ambitious strategies while ensuring operational excellence.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Program Strategy and Implementation:
● Works closely with Board, staff, advisors, and other stakeholders to review and update MBFT’s strategic plan and programmatic direction to ensure the organization is best achieving its mission in line with community needs.
● Develops organization and program benchmarks, and manages program evaluation and review.
● Acts as a key member of the program team, responsible for implementing Industry Engagement programs (e.g., Lost Gear Recovery, Buoy Bulletin newsletter) during this transitional phase of growth.

Community Relations:
● Serves as MBFT’s chief spokesperson, ensuring high visibility to the public, promoting the organization’s mission and programs, and expanding its reach throughout Monterey Bay and beyond.
● Communicates regularly with stakeholders to identify community issues and needs.
● Builds new alliances and strengthens existing alliances with fisheries stakeholders, local, state, and federal agency staff, non-governmental organizations, and other partners to expand the organization’s ability to achieve its mission and vision.

Fundraising:
● Reviews and expands fundraising strategies to ensure MBFT has sufficient resources to maintain and grow programs and internal operations.
● Identifies, cultivates, and sustains relationships with individual and institutional donors.

Finances:
● Oversees financial management, including oversight of the annual financial review and tax filings, adoption of multi-program budgets, tracking program expenditures, debt management, and asset management.
● Reviews, understands, and communicates the organization’s financial condition to the Board of Directors and key stakeholders.

Governance:
● Grows, maintains, and supports a strong board of directors, administers meetings, advises and informs board members, and builds strategic board involvement for short and long-term operations.
● Works closely with MBFT advisors to improve program strategies, operations, and community outreach.

Administration and Human Resource Management:
● Maintains a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top-quality people.
● Effectively uses outside expert consultants and contractors to carry out and ensure the highest quality of MBFT’s programs and practices.
● Oversees and advises staff and contractors on topics including fundraising, quota management, marketing and outreach, budgeting, human resources, finances, and program strategy.
● Encourages ongoing staff development and education.
● Conducts and documents regular performance evaluations.
● Ensures that MBFT, its staff, and its programs comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

Education & Experience: 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
● Knowledge of, passion for, and interest in fisheries sustainability and local food movements – existing connection to the fishing community a plus.
● 6+ years of experience in nonprofit leadership and management.
● Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience – Master’s degree a plus.
● Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning, and change management skills.
● Excellent donor relations skills, understanding of the funding community and demonstrated fundraising success.
● Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making, and reporting.
● Exceptional organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation, with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple initiatives and projects.
● Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
● Experience facilitating, convening, engaging, and communicating with diverse stakeholders, with the ability to work effectively with different constituencies, personalities, and viewpoints.
● Prideful attention to detail, robust work ethic, and commitment to individual and organizational excellence.
● Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends, and occasional travel, to meet the organization's needs.
● Proficiency in common technological platforms, including Microsoft Office and the Google suite. Experience with Salesforce or similar Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software and experience with Quickbooks Online a plus.
● Access to a car with a valid US driver's license (mileage is reimbursed at the IRS standard rate).
