Farm Manager / Educator at Eden Village West

Eden Village West is hiring a Farm Manager / Educator. This is a full-time one year position with the possibility of extension upon mutual agreement. The Farm Manager / Educator will have a key leadership role in developing and managing the farm and will serve as the lead farm educator over the summer. During the year, this position will also facilitate year-round camper recruitment programs and assist with marketing and administrative duties. The Farm Manager / Educator will also participate in the third JOFEE Fellowship cohort (Jewish Outdoor, Food, and Environmental Education). This is a national, year-long program of professional development, mentorship and training for Jewish environmental educators working at organizations around the country.
About Eden Village West
Eden Village West is an organic farm-to-table residential Jewish camp in Sonoma County, California with a 6-week overnight summer program as well as other farm programming throughout the spring and fall. Our 3rd-9th grade campers enjoy farming, wilderness and homesteading skills, culinary arts, music and sports as they become empowered to promote a more environmentally sustainable, socially just, and spiritually connected world for all.
Salary & Benefits
Eden Village West offers a compensation and benefits package based on experience. Housing and three organic meals per day will be provided during the summer camp season for approximately two months.
The Farm Manager / Educator is responsible for:
Leading staff and volunteers in building a small educational farm including annual production beds, perennial growing areas, animal pasture, tool storage, and educational program spaces
Managing summer animal program and overseeing animal wellness
Developing and maintaining organized farm records including a crop plan, farm fertility plan, and harvest records
Purchasing, inventorying, and maintaining farm supplies throughout the year
Developing curriculum and serving as the lead farm educator during all farm programming
Directing farm staff, volunteers, campers and other community members in meaningful, educational, engaging, and productive farm projects
Communicating regularly with the Head Chef and Culinary Arts Specialists about the farm harvest for the main kitchen and teaching kitchen
Managing farm budget
Supporting the Camp Director and Assistant Director with marketing and camper recruitment
Planning and facilitating year-round camper recruitment programs on the farm, at schools, synagogues, camp fairs, and other community events
Creating the 2018 Farm Report that summarizes year one accomplishments and makes recommendations for 2019 farm development
Eden Village West has a very small year-round staff. This position requires flexibility, a willingness to learn new skills and take on responsibilities outside the Farm Manager / Educator’s immediate job description when needed
Live in residence at camp in California during staff training, summer camp, and post camp wrap-up (early June - early August)
Work on the farm in Healdsburg two to three days a week in the spring and fall
Work out of Eden Village West’s year-round office in Richmond, CA several days a week in the spring, fall, and winter
Participate in JOFEE programming throughout the year including all JOFEE Fellowship retreats -- more info on the JOFEE Fellowship
Qualifications and Skills
Farming and animal care experience
Proven experience working as a youth educator -- Jewish environmental education experience preferred but not required
High level of comfort and confidence in front of groups of children and parents
Desire to help cultivate a pluralistic, inclusive and kind Jewish community
Be enthusiastic, excited to try new things, generous, willing to be silly, flexible, creative, caring, and able to maintain a positive team attitude throughout a full work day
Excellent organization skills
Management experience preferred but not required
