The Organization

The mission of Our Neighbors Farm & Pantry, a nonprofit organization in Graham County, AZ, is to make sure that all local people have access to quality food and to provide education in the areas of nutrition and STEM. Our Neighbors Farm & Pantry operates a food pantry distributing over a quarter million pounds of food annually. The one acre growing area producing upwards of 10,000 pounds of vegetables and fruit each year also serves as a basic resource for an education program. Plans are underway to expand farming operations to generate more earned income.

Position Summary

The farm manager is responsible for furthering the mission of Our Neighbors Farm & Pantry in two areas: 1) increase local access to quality food by building the farm’s sustainable vegetable and fruit production and 2) support the farm’s role as an education resource, as required. The farm manager reports to the Executive Director of Our Neighbors Farm & Pantry.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Collaborate with the Executive Director and Pantry Manager of Our Neighbors Farm & Pantry to define production goals, strategies, and methods
Collaborate with educators and Garden Educator to ensure a rich gardening environment for classes
Prepare crop plans, including cultivars, quantities, timing, and use of growing structures
Manage all daily operations, including but not limited to soil improvement, fertilization, water quality control, irrigation, plant propagation, planting, pest and weed control, and harvest
Keep in touch with current horticultural practices; find scientific solutions to horticultural challenges and problems
Work a significant amount of time in the field daily; train, organize, schedule, and supervise volunteers, interns, AmeriCorps members, probationers, and prison trustees; inspire others to do their best to achieve a great result
Record accurate, useful farm records
Manage Harvest Your Own, and work with Gila Valley Food Coalition and local producers
Help prepare yearly farm budget; report financial data to Executive Director; monitor farm accounts; report progress on farm related projects and grants
Maintain infrastructure, equipment, and tools; develop new infrastructure; purchase materials, supplies, tools, and equipment
Produce compost; collect or receive compostable and mulching materials
Maintain farm sanitation standards and general appearance
Care for a limited number of farm animals
Maintain the Native Pollinator Garden

Education & Experience: 

3+ years experience growing produce with sustainable practices
2+ years experience managing volunteers or employees
Communication and analytical skills normally acquired through a 4-year college education
Ability to work comfortably with a wide variety of people, effectively multitask, manage time to meet natural or organizational deadlines, endure demanding outdoor working conditions
Willingness and ability to work irregular and sometimes long hours (40+ hours per week) depending upon crop needs
In addition, the farm manager should love small-scale farming and horticulture and be an encouraging gardening mentor
