The Smart Farm engages the community in diversified, sustainable agriculture and community food security work in Barrington, Illinois. Smart Farm’s mission is simple, provide high-quality produce to the community while protecting our soil and water. Smart Farm ensures food accessibility by donating healthy produce to our area food Pantries. We are implementing robust conservation practices to protect our land, water, and biological systems.
As we expand our work, we seek a Farm Program Manager who has the people and organizational skills to plan and oversee expanding farm programming. The ideal candidate has a passion for the local food movement and the ability to outreach to the community. The Farm Program Manager will play an essential role in designing, planning, and implementing programs in line with Smart Farm’s mission and vision. Prior to the growing season, they are responsible for planning the year’s calendar and assisting with farm planning based on programming needs. During the growing season, they are accountable for supporting and training volunteers, contributing to farm production, coordinating food pantry deliveries and pick-ups, and organizing programs that actively engage the community. Postseason they will provide program reporting, data collection and assist in creating the yearly budget.
Program Planning • Develop and refine systems, processes, and documentation that help ensure consistent, high-quality programming • Manage methods for data collection, analysis, and reporting • Support the Executive Director and Farm Manager in creating an annual budget • Coordinate volunteer materials, including waivers, emergency contact forms • Plan for volunteer farm activities • Lead the development and implementation of programs, activities, and resources that provide the farm’s mission • Analyze and incorporate ongoing feedback and research into program and training design Program Management • Be the face of Smart Farm volunteer and community outreach programs and the first point of contact for community members. • Lead the development of program events such as farm tours, community dinners, and end of season celebrations • Develop and deliver learning opportunities for volunteers • Foster current community partnerships and look to expand partnerships to meet Smart Farm’s goals • Coordinate with Farm Manager to ensure timely food donations • Maintain all data collection for food donation • Establishment of consistent programming that engages the community inline with Smart Farm’s mission and interest • Provide guidance and support to volunteers and community partners during the field season • Expand volunteer opportunities during the week based on capacity • Lead training and education to volunteers Farm Production • Support the Farm Manager in food production needs on the farm • Oversee the perennial installations across the entire farm, including plant health • Creation of expansion plan for permaculture areas • Create a standard fertilizing/nutrient application schedule • Creation of long term planning for value-added products and associated programming
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Two to four years of experience teaching, leading or mentoring • Two to four years of experience in agriculture or food systems • Exceptional time management and organizational skills • Ability to toggle between programmatic details and organization-wide goals and initiatives • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Strong facilitation skills in both a large-group and small-group setting
