Raleigh’s Hillside Farm is a five-acre certified organic farm specializing in diversified vegetable production. Our produce is sold primarily through a 350-member CSA program and a couple dozen wholesale accounts throughout Dane county. Our team is small but mighty. We are committed to building efficient systems, providing an educational and gratifying work environment, and building community through good, high-quality food.


Raleigh’s Hillside Farm is seeking an experienced field manager to partner with the farm owner in overseeing all aspects of field production and management of our small crew to help make our organic farm more efficient and successful.

We are looking for someone with a great work ethic, positive attitude, and a strong dedication to our mission who is excited to manage others kindly and efficiently. The field manager will be responsible for ensuring field production stays on schedule by leading, coordinating and motivating the crew through most field tasks, conducting routine organic spraying for pest and disease management, and maintaining accurate records of all field activities. The field manager will work closely with the farm owner to outline priorities and understand all SOPs.


The season runs from March 14th to November 18th, 2022.

Work hours are 8-5 p.m. Monday-Friday with some variation early and late season.

Pay range is $16-18/hour based on experience.

First year benefits include a work gear stipend in the spring and access to surplus organic produce every week.

Duties & Responsibilities: 


The job of the field manager is day-to-day oversight of many aspects of field production. This includes:

Understanding all daily and weekly priorities in the greenhouse, hoop house, and field

Working with the farm owner to thoroughly understand all SOPs

Positively and efficiently leading crew members through daily and weekly priorities in regards to seeding, planting, harvesting, weeding, laying fabric and irrigation, and other field maintenance tasks

Keeping in constant communication with the pack shed manager to ensure all harvest goals are met and quality is consistent with our farm’s standards

Ensuring that all crew members working in the field are demonstrating safe operation and proper care for all equipment

Ensuring proper harvesting and handling of crops in regards to food safety standards

Getting results from crew members by making the right decisions for maximum efficiency and productivity

Setting and keeping the team moving at an appropriate pace of work

Providing feedback to team members as needed

Planning ahead so that co-workers are moving efficiently from task to task

Assisting farm owner in greenhouse, hoop house, and field irrigation

Conducting routine organic spraying for pest and disease management

Maintaining accurate records of all field activities for organic certification

Notifying farm managers of limited inventory of supplies

Other maintenance and field tasks as needed

Education & Experience: 


At least three years’ experience working on an organic vegetable farm.

Prior leadership or management experience in any setting (on or off farm) is desirable.

People person who enjoys motivating and empowering co-workers to succeed.

Fast, hands-on learner who takes instruction well, is not afraid to ask questions, and quickly applies lessons learned to their work.

Energetic person who understands deadlines and shows up on time with a positive attitude.

Active communicator who enjoys being part of a team but is also comfortable working alone on projects occasionally.

Reliable, responsible, and self-motivated individual who is open to receiving feedback.

Individual with strong attention to detail, thorough observation skills, and ability to maintain consistent standards for bunching and ripeness while keeping harvest speed in mind.

Not afraid of long days of physical work in all weather conditions.

Ability to lift 50 pounds is required.

Reliable transportation to the farm is also required.
