Job Description: 

The Field Organizer engages food and farming stakeholders across California, supporting their
involvement in policy campaigns aimed at creating a climate smart, resilient, and more equitable
agricultural system. The Organizer builds relationships with farmers and ranchers, agriculture experts,
and community organizations and provides opportunities to participate in and advocate for CalCAN’s
policy campaigns. The Organizer collaborates with CalCAN’s team and partners around the state on
tactics such as farm tours, meetings with state elected representatives, advisor strategy sessions, and
calls to action.

This is a full-time salaried position in the range of $61,000 - $65,000 (commensurate with experience),
with excellent health benefits. The location of the position is somewhat flexible and could be located at a
CalCAN office in Sebastopol or Sacramento, CA or in the San Joaquin Valley or Central Coast.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

The Field Organizer reports to CalCAN’s Executive Director, and is a key player in a nimble, strategic,
committed five-person team plus a lobbyist, interns, and a wide network of partners and advisors across
the state. As the Organizer, you will develop and cultivate enduring relationships with partners and
advisors, involve them as models and advisors, and mobilize them to take action on CalCAN campaigns.
The main focus of your work will be to:
• Expand and deepen relationships with CalCAN’s network of farmers and other stakeholders
(e.g., sustainable agriculture, public health, environmental, and farmworker advocates, etc.)
● Educate partners and policymakers with events such as farm tours, constituent meetings with
policymakers, roundtables, and strategy meetings
● Collect and share stories of agricultural climate leaders as models to the media and policymakers
● Engage partners to elevate agriculture’s powerful climate solutions
● Support efforts to advance social and racial justice with policy and organizing strategies

Education & Experience: 

● Demonstrated interest in and familiarity with sustainable agriculture and/or climate change
● Professional experience in campaign, organizing and/or advocacy work
● Exceptional skills and a commitment to working collaboratively with a diverse range of partners
and colleagues
● Excellent written and verbal communications skills
● Motivated, organized and collaborative self-starter who is eager to meet deadlines while
managing multiple projects
● Access to a personal vehicle and possession of a valid driver’s license and willingness to travel
throughout the state for partner outreach and events
