Strawberry Point School Seeking a Garden and Wetlands Naturalist
Proposal for Services (Job Opening, Part-time)

Strawberry Point School is located in Mill Valley on the Strawberry Peninsula. Tidal and seasonal wetlands and the Bay are steps away from the school. A garden of raised beds and habitat for local birds and butterflies was created on campus when the school reopened in 2000. Cliff Swallows make their home annually at the school. In 2007, a playing field was installed, a seasonal wetlands was created, and work was started to restore our tidal wetland.

General Summary:
• Develop and teach hands on curriculum designed to integrate our school garden, nearby seasonal and tidal wetlands, and bay into the learning process.
• Collaborate with teachers to supplement and enhance science curriculum through experiential learning through the garden and wetlands, in conjunction with state science standards.
• Work with the Wetlands Committee/Chair to support mitigation efforts, including replacing non-native plants with native and monitoring the success.
• Develop an approach to continue and improve utilization of the garden including proposed tools, resources and purchases required for an ongoing and sustainable program.
• Help to organize parent/student work days, and maintain general garden health

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Knowledge, skills & experience
Educated on and experience with local flora and fauna, native plants, and wildlife
Degree or practical experience in ecology, science or related areas
Prefer someone with a background in instruction of elementary school children (K-5), or at a minimum very good with children and group management.

2. Essential Physical Requirements:
Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with teachers, parents and elementary students. Ability to help with the gardening activities, lift and carry 20 lbs.

3. Schedule requirements:
Ideally, position would work approximately 15 hours a week, from January - June, 2020. This person would be available for teachers and students consistently during the school year (with the exception of vacations and holidays). The preference is that the individual be available after 2:30pm on some days in order to meet with teachers after school. Possibility of some weekend work in order to coordinate parent events. Compensation: $30/hour
