Job Description: 

We are looking for an educator who can manage a one acre garden, 40’ x 70’ high tunnel, and deliver agricultural education to school aged children. Garden production is typically for educational purposes. The option to expand garden production to support CSAs or other market ventures is possible. Our ideal candidate is a collaborative, highly-organized, and flexible individual with a few years of gardening/farming experience who is comfortable working with youth.

This is a full-time position with two components, school year and summer. The roles and responsibilities of the position will vary based on the time of year. During the school year this position requires managing the farm, high tunnel, and traveling to various Bar-T centers to facilitate Harvest Club. Harvest Club typically takes place between 3:00/3:30 and 5:30 in Montgomery County Schools. In the summer this position requires maintaining the garden, high tunnel, and running Harvest Camp as a specialist and head counselor. Summer sessions run roughly 8-10 weeks from June through August. The camp day runs from 8:30 to 4:00 with occasional extended hours.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

School Year:
Garden and Facility Management - 55%
Prepare plans and schedules for planting and harvesting, particularly in regards to Harvest camp programming
Develop agricultural systems while employing best practices for soil health, food quality, and safety
Order materials needed for crop production, garden maintenance, food preparation/cooking, and any other supplies for educational purposes
Ensure that garden infrastructure, landscape, and equipment are safe and in good working order with the help of Bar-T maintenance staff
Oversee and coordinate the care of existing rain gardens, pollinator gardens, pasture/meadow, and any USDA, MDA reporting.
Education and Events - 35%
Lead Harvest Club activities at various Bar-T Childcare centers
Assist in leading education programs in collaboration with Mountainside Education & Enrichment (MEE) educators
Collaborate with MEE staff to develop curriculum and programming
Administrative - 10%
Maintain farm budget and submit monthly expense reports
Participate in planning for long-term farm development
Research funding opportunities related to agricultural education, best farming practices, and sustainability
Summer:
Education - 60%
Lead Harvest Camp at Mountainside
Program planning and daily facilitation
Group accountability
Management and oversight of junior staff
Ordering and shopping
Regular communication with leadership staff
Head Counselor duties as outlined at orientation
Assist in leading education programs in collaboration with Mountainside Education & Enrichment (MEE) educators
Garden and Facility Management - 30%
Maintaining the garden and high tunnel, for production and harvesting on behalf of summer camp
Maintain the space in which Harvest camp will be held both indoors and outdoors, both areas should remain in safe, clean, working order
Ensure that garden infrastructure, landscape, and equipment are safe and in good working order with the help of Bar-T maintenance staff
Administrative - 10%
Maintain budget and submit monthly expense reports
Attend mandatory trainings, orientations, and staff meetings

Education & Experience: 

Requirements

2+ years in farm/garden production including crop planning, irrigation, cultivation, pest/disease control, and harvest
Must be able to operate the tractor and utility vehicle on property
Must be able to work extended hours (up to 50/week during peak - Spring to Summer and Summer to Fall)
Must be able to lift 50 pounds
Must be able to work under physically demanding conditions
Comfortable working on your feet for long periods of time
Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions
Background Check and Fingerprinting (at time of contract)
Valid State issued driver’s license and ability to travel to different Bar-T after school locations

Preferred Experience

Associates and/or Bachelors in Agriculture, Agroecology, Sustainable Food Systems, Farm Management, Environmental Studies, or similar field
2+ years experience working in farm/garden-based education, agriculture, environmental nonprofits, or field-based research/studies
Demonstrated experience working with school age children
Demonstrated experience/comfort with managing staff
