The Head Farmer is a highly personable, motivated leader who helps refine the vision of the farm and bring it to fruition. This individual will fully develop the overall farm vision and plan, establish and growing the farm operations and the farm's relationships in the community. Year-round housing is available as well as base salary and benefits. The position is year-round and production is expected to continue throughout the entire year. Manages all aspects of farm operations including farm maintenance.
Able to collaborate with Ag and orchard consultants as necessary to ensure the success of all farm components.
Support all aspects of farm planning including planting/harvest schedules, and storage standards.
Ensure the annual budget for the farm will support growth, additional equipment and infrastructure essential for production.
Maintain meticulous digital growing and financial records.
Monitor crop health in field and respond to issues.
Maintain timely harvest, sales, and other farm records.
Maintain clean and orderly storage of tools equipment and supplies.
Assist in waste organics collection and composting.
Develop and manage animal husbandry components i.e. bees, chickens etc.
Provide and maintain optimal conditions for plant health.
Follow weather reports and organize assigned work schedule accordingly.
Maintain harvest standards for quality presentation, washing, packaging and storage.
Coordinate and manage harvest days and market operations as needed.
Safe and timely produce deliveries to on site clients.
Hire, train, coach and discipline seasonal farm staff, apprentices and volunteers (as needed).
Manage to and maintain an annual budget
At all times, represent Finely Farm in a positive, friendly, professional way.
Contribute ideas and opinions to make the organization more productive, efficient and forward-thinking.
1-2 years of experience in intensive, small plot, high-yield vegetable production; flower growing and fruit arborist is a plus.
Demonstrated expertise in organic vegetable growing, soil and compost management techniques.
Physically capable of lifting up to 75 pounds and working long hours in the hot sun.
Experience in the safe operation and general maintenance of farm tools and basic machinery.
Seed propagation, greenhouse maintenance, and season extension experience.
Demonstrated expertise developing, following and executing an annual crop plan and maintaining farm records.
Must be willing to work flexible schedule including weekends.
Farmer(s) must have a valid Driver’s License.
A clear and personable communicator.
Positive attitude, excitement to work with the local community.
Enthusiastic about collaborating with onsite staff in development of educational programing
Interact with and lead volunteers, guests and other tour groups.
Inquisitive nature, constantly innovating and offering ideas.
Desire to be continuously learning, and self-starting.
Experience developing HACCP plans a plus.
Language Skills: Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos in English. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers, to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's and perform basic algebraic calculations. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Other Skills and Abilities: The ability to work well with a team, to prioritize, a sense of urgency and a real concern for guest satisfaction. Must be detailed oriented. Need strong clerical, organizational and communication skills.
