Thriving hospitality/homesteading operation is looking for an organized, energetic, ambitious individual to manage a hundred-acre farm (with connected B&B) with peach/plum/apple orchards, berry plots (raspberry, blackberry, strawberry), large well-established garden, sheep and goat flocks, draft horses, and poultry.
We already have a thriving B&B operation and an established fleece/wool, business, but would like to see both of those leveraged for greater profit. We would also like to develop the financial viability of other parts of the farm (eggs, fruit, firewood, etc.).
We are looking for a candidate with a deep interest in sustainable agriculture and livestock raising, organization skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work well with colleagues and outside vendors who will assist with ongoing projects.
Our hope is that our new Head Farmer will:
Arrange garden for highest yield and good soil health
Plan how to maximize the garden and the fruit trees to supply the B&B with all-local produce
Find and source from other local, preferably organic, vendors
Organize and maximize our existing wool and fleece business
Organize the sale of our duck and chicken eggs
Move us forward into raising healthy, well-cared-for meat animals as well
Supervise pasture health and manage pasture rotation
Help plan for future “supper club” evenings that use all local produce and meat
Keep large fish pond properly stocked for fishing/eating
Assist with care of horses on property
We offer a competitive salary and benefits package (health, life & disability insurance, 401K, and generous vacation time).
We’re looking for someone who has a good eye for detail, loves the outdoors, enjoys animals,
isn’t afraid to learn new skills, is interested in developing new marketing strategies for farm goods, and is excited to work with an energetic, competent team. We are willing to provide training as necessary for enthusiastic, dedicated candidates.
Candidate must have reliable transportation, provide a valid driver’s license, be able to pass
a drug/background screening, and be willing to follow policies relating to OSHA and safety standards.
The ideal candidate will also contribute new ideas, ventures, and projects to the farm.
Please note that this farm is a nonsmoking property; no tobacco or vaping usage is permitted on
Duties will include, but are not limited to:
● Daily care of animals as required, to include feeding, cleaning of stalls and folds,
assistance with vet/farrier visits, assisting shearer, etc.
● Monitoring of grain/hay levels and placing monthly order with feed store for delivery
Staying up to date on necessary pesticide sprays or organic options
Orchard pruning, spraying, and general management
Garden planting, maintenance, and harvesting
Assisting with livestock deworming, foot trimming, shearing (we have a professional shearer but this is a two-person job!), and general livestock management
● Coordinating with outside vendors (subcontractors, equipment repair specialists,
construction firms, etc.), as well as supervise and manage outsourced farm constructio projects
● Keeping accurate records of expenses for each project
● Maintaining inventory of tools and supplies
● Responding to 'off-hour' emergency situations when necessary (farms/hospitality
businesses do not always run on a 9-5 schedule!)
While we are not looking for a specific set of experiences, applicants MUST be comfortable with and confident around large animals who can be aggressive (draft horses, rams & bucks during mating season). Experience with vegetable gardening and orchard management is a plus. We are willing to train the right candidate and above all are looking for enthusiasm, organizational ability, and the ability to work with a team.
