The Nestldown is a 180 acre property with an event area covering 35 acres with over 12 garden rooms. These “rooms” feature different planting themes including a Chapel, Fantasy Garden, Fox Glove Meadow, and the Medieval Garden as well as topiary, perennial borders, woodland garden, butterfly garden, foliage garden, aquatic features, meadows, lawns, Redwood forest, natural woodlands, historic orchards, and many seasonal annual display gardens.

It is our hope to provide a wonderful memorable experience both for the people who come here, as well as for the people who work here. As such, the person in this role will help oversee the infrastructure & systems to ensure four seasons of beauty while developing the capabilities & motivation of both the internal team and our external partners. This role reports to the Senior Director of Horticulture & Facilities.

Salary of $95,000-$125,000 depending on skill set and experience

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Essential functions and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Responsible to:
Ensure the foundational infrastructure of the gardens; working irrigation in all key areas, annual preparation of the beds, as needed arboriculture work to ensure for outstanding lawn, tree, and plant performance;
Manage and support overall plant health and soil nutrition strategies to include sustainable gardening practices and integrated pest management;
In conjunction with the leadership team develop plans & Implementation necessary to improve key garden areas;
Bring in contractors and outsourced horticulture related services as needed;
Establish and implement aesthetic and horticultural standards to maintain and enhance the gardens and grounds using best practices;

Manage and monitor departmental structure and responsibilities of each garden lead to accomplish short-term and long-term goals;
Manage a team of motivated individuals; working together toward the common agreed upon goals;
Hire and train employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems;
Communicate long-and short term projects and priorities: Planning on a daily, Be-weekly, quarterly, and annual cadence;
Maintain records and files of grounds and horticulture related plans and activities.

Internal Partnerships/Relationships:
Collaborate with the Design and Procurement Consultant who, in conjunction with the Nestldown garden leaders, develops the plans for the design, plant procurement and resources as needed for short- and long-term goals;
Collaborate with the Leadership team for resource management and equipment maintenance;
Assist the Leadership team with capital projects on the ranch (the adjacent 140+ acres.

Education & Experience:

Extensive management experience in horticulture;
A lead from the front mentality: You’re eager to get “dirty” with the team;
Ideally possess a degree relevant to horticulture
A robust knowledge in the following areas;
Perennial garden care
Turf management
Orchard management
Irrigation competency
Designing perennial and annual gardens
Conversational Spanish is a bonus
