Reunity Resources’ Community Farm is hiring a Lead Grower for the 2022 season. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with the Farm Director and Farm Crew staff of a non-profit community organization, to provide incredible, nutritious, organically and regeneratively grown food to the Santa Fe community in a compelling and engaging work environment. The Lead Grower is responsible for managing all tasks related to field production, cultivation, maintenance, and the leadership of the Farm Crew.

We are looking for an energetic person who is passionate and skilled about organic and regenerative farming who will do what it takes to allow the farm to prosper. The best candidates will be pursuing a career in small-scale organic farming and have an ample amount of experience and understanding of plant propagation, soil health, and working with a team.

This is a exempt position offering $16-$18 per hour DOE. The position will begin on January 25, 2022, and end on November 31, 2022, with the possibility to continue in 2023 with the confirmation of the Farm Director. Agricultural positions are not subject to overtime per federal regulations.

Schedule:

Jan. 25- February 28: Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 6 hours per day, 9am-3pm.

March 1-November 30: Tuesdays- Saturdays, Approx. 8-10 hours/day. Days, start times, and duration vary throughout the year and week. Typically, during the May-Nov. hours are from 7am-3pm, except on Saturday Farmers’ Market days, which can begin at 4:30am and end around 2 pm.

There will be small tasks on off days (an hour or less) at least once a month to open and close the hoop houses and water the starts and beds as needed.

You must have reliable transportation to arrive as early as 4:30 AM and leave as late as 7:30 PM when needed, though we aim to maintain the regular schedule to the farm to.

Essential Duties:

Communicate regularly with the Farm Director to understand and execute organizational tasks involving food propagation and community engagement goals.

Understand, execute, and adjust annually the crop plan with the Farm Director the, including the field planting schedule, greenhouse schedule, expected harvest sheet, annual field maps in order to maintain necessary weekly planting and seeding schedules in accordance with organizational distribution goals.

Execute and manage all aspects of organic diversified vegetable production and year-round growing operations, including but not limited to: seed starting and greenhouse care; field preparation with BCS; planting and seeding of cash and cover crops; crop maintenance; using amendments including compost and vermicompost as well as additional organic products as needed (including procurement of); organic pest and disease control.

Follow regenerative and organic methods to support healthy soil and crops, including use of crop rotation, cover cropping, amending with compost, low-to-no tillage, mulching, and organic weed management.

Work with the Farm Director to follow the annual budget regarding seeds, tools, crew, and infrastructure needs.

Follow recordkeeping procedures for all aspects of greenhouse and field production including labor and equipment demands, time needed for tasks, etc. Enforce proper recordkeeping of when tasks are finished on a hard copy of both the greenhouse and field schedules.

Organize, maintain, and keep in good working order all farm and field tools including hoes, shovels, rakes, direct seeders, harvest tools, pruning and orchard tools, etc. Enforce proper organization and storage of farm tools across all visitors to the farm and the company.

Help hire, train, and supervise seasonal Farm Crew staff annually with the Farm Director to maintain production goals for the farm.

Annually hire seasonal Farm Crew with the Farm Director in accordance with annual labor budget parameters; conduct interviews on the farm and/or over the phone (as needed); maintain a respectful, timely process for all applicants; aim to hire seasonal staff within a week of projected timeline for bringing in the Field Crew; create and send annual job offers; maintain documentation of hiring process.

Clearly communicate and train seasonal staff on farm systems and procedures including:

o Use, understanding and maintenance of field tools, and the effective and appropriate usage.

o Standards for harvest, wash, pack protocols per crop including bunch size, harvest goals and pace, cleanliness of crop, standard pack sizing, proper cleaning and sanitation of produce, wash station recordkeeping procedures and ensuring staff understands the daily harvest sheet.

o Necessary production-focused tasks including greenhouse work; field preparation and seeding and transplanting of crops; weed control (including hand and hoe cultivation); irrigation; trellising; pest and disease control; harvest and post-harvest management of crops.

Clearly establish roles, individual responsibilities and team-/company-wide communication standards with Farm Crew to ensure quality of work and efficiencies in production.

Set a reasonable work pace for all farm crew, create team culture and morale, and work with individuals as needed to improve focus and technique.

Be sensitive to individual staff members’ needs: create and sustain a positive work environment with shared goals.

Collaborate with the Farm Director to set work schedules for Farm Crew in accordance to demands of the season (often determined by month) for both field and greenhouse production. Create and enforce weekly rotation of farm chores and duties to occur on Sundays and Mondays, as well as weekly rotation of the Farm Crew attending the Farmers’ Market as a vendor on Saturdays.

Lead weekly volunteer events and monitor volunteers while they are working to ensure they remain safe when using tools, and also the plantings and land are not accidently improperly impacted or altered.

Oversee and communicate daily and weekly task lists to Farm Crew and host weekly check-in and goal setting meeting as a team.

Oversee Farm Crew weekly schedules and timesheets and communicate each staff members’ hours to the ExecutiveDirector by end of day Wednesday biweekly to ensure farm staff is paid on time.

Collaborate and participate with community events as determined by the Program Director, not to exceed agreed upon hours per month.

Participate in biweekly manager meetings. Give farm and program updates.

Additional Duties:

Enforce excellent organization and rodent-proofing of seed storage and the seedling propagation greenhousesthroughout the year.

Work with Farm Director to maintain and manage proper care of farm equipment and machines, primarily outlined as the maintenance of the BCS tractor and proper communication and recordkeeping of such upkeep, including regular oil changes, basic repairs, and winterizing; maintenance of the ATV and proper communication and recordkeeping of such upkeep, including regular oil changes, basic repairs, and winterizing.

Work with Farm Director to manage all field utilities in accordance with Reunity’s standards, including but not limited to the organization and procurement of irrigation supplies on annual and seasonal bases as needed; maintenance and repair of field irrigation supplies; organization and care of production supplies including tomato stakes, row cover, hoops and bags, silage tarps, etc.

Maintain end of year seed inventory, adjust seed order annually to fit the next season’s need, do price comparisons and analysis, order seeds in a timely manner (prior to March) to ensure availability and to meet full production goals for the next season.

Education & Experience: 

At least three years of experience working full seasons as a crew member on a vegetable farm required.

Excel proficiency required to create and maintain basic spreadsheets.

Google Drive folder maintenance preferred.

Additional experience that demonstrates engagement with and passion for the environment, regenerative agriculture and/or sustainability preferred.

· 1+ years of supervisory experience preferred.

As this is manual labor outdoors, an ability to consistently and efficiently perform physically demanding and repetitive tasks in all types of weather conditions, including regularly bending, walking, standing for long durations and on uneven terrain and lifting 30 lbs regularly is required.

Additional Qualifications:

Ability to maintain an energetic, positive, engaged attitude, be consistently well paced, and have a great capacity to engage in clear, successful communication and feedback with the Farm Director and Farm Crew. Ideal candidates are self-motivated and adaptable.

An ability to learn quickly and work independently at pace, as well as manage a small team in the planning and execution of daily farm tasks.

Ensure that farm crew members are proactive and attentive and assist them in understanding their tasks and how to improve their execution.

A cheery, friendly disposition and willingness to work with a variety of folks and experience levels is required. This is a very public farm with a lot of direct interaction with volunteers, interns and work-traders. The Lead Grower must be able to adequately explain tasks, help guide individuals as necessary.

Punctuality and a high level of quality and attention to detail is required, along with a strong commitment to completing all tasks and requirements that will allow the farm to prosper.
