This is a unique opportunity to join a vibrant and expanding program in continuing education for horticultural crop production based at the Texas Tech University regional teaching site in Fredericksburg, Texas at the Hill Country University Center.

The Lecturer will be expected to lead and expand the continuing education professional certificate program in Local Food Production. The Lecturer will focus on development and delivery of additional courses in small-scale commercial production of horticultural food crops, emphasizing sustainable production methods. This program seeks to encourage expansion of local food production in the Texas Hill Country region and is complementary to Texas Tech’s successful professional certificate programs in Viticulture and Winemaking. Service duties include program-building, as well as commitment to extra-curricular activities.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

The Lecturer will also contribute to the Department of Plant and Soil Science’s undergraduate degree program by teaching a course in Sustainable Fruit & Nut Crop Production.

Effectively teach certificate and undergraduate courses, as evidenced by student and peer evaluations of teaching.

Prepare and administer course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, tests, and handouts.

Evaluate and grade students’ class work, laboratory and field work, assignments, and papers in timely manner.

Plan and manage operations of TTU Small Farm for effective support of the Local Food Production program with assistance of Technician

Education & Experience: 

Required Qualifications:

M.S. degree in horticulture, plant science, or a closely related field
Ability to teach effectively

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience, skill, and knowledge of small-farm production of vegetables, fruits and/or ornamentals
Two years teaching experience
Distance education course development and instruction experience
Computer software skills in Microsoft Office products and Blackboard
Excellent demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
Proven work ethic and ability to work effectively as a team member
Excellent organizational skills
Valid driver’s license
