Morning Star Farm is a small family owned farm and homestead on Orcas Island, WA growing organic vegetables, fruit, and flowers. The farm includes 20 acres of forested land, 4 acres of vegetables and flowers, a large pond, a small fruit orchard, and several acres of sloping pasture. We are hiring 3 interns to live and work with us this year.
Internship Starts: April 2021
Internship Ends: October 2021
Work on the farm includes seeding, transplanting, cultivating, irrigating, harvesting, preparing produce and flowers for market, CSA dispatch, delivering to restaurants, food bank, grocery stores, and selling at the farmer’s market. Work entails physical labor and early mornings, repetitive, and sometimes challenging tasks in all kinds of weather.
Farmhands will gain experience with all aspects of our farm and leave with an understanding of the skills needed to run a small farm and homestead.
Prior farm experience is preferred. We ask for the desire to work hard, good communication skills, a sense of humor, attention to detail, ability to comfortably lift up to 50 lbs, and a willingness to work with all personalities. Must have valid drivers license, and be comfortable driving for occasional deliveries and to the weekly farmers market.
There are several small cabins available as housing on the property. Each is equipped with basic cooking facilities, outdoor shower, and a wood stove. There is a composting toilet nearby. Our large barn functions as a communal space with wifi, a full kitchen, wood stove, and large living room area.
