Norwell Farms is a non-profit education organization on the South Shore in Norwell, MA. We take pride in our mission to promote the benefits of local regenerative agriculture through farm-based education and community engagement across all ages. We are hiring and looking for energetic and talented people!
Norwell Farms is hiring a Farmer/Field Manager to run farming of ~1/2 acre for vegetable production. S/he will recruit, coordinate, and oversee the volunteer program. The position is seasonal and part-time, with an expected start date of April 1st, 2020. July and August months may be up to full time. Pay is commensurate with experience, but likely ~$18-20/hr.
Duties of the Field Manager Include:
~Develop and implement a farm plan for a financially sustainable, organic vegetable farm operation at ~1/2 acre area.
~Grow vegetable production for wholesale value, donations in support of our food insecurity programs, as well as for the learning garden in support of our educational programming.
~In this model, the Farmer will grow higher value crops per acre by building soils with compost and other amendments, reducing tillage, maximizing plantings per bed and controlling weeds.
~The Farmer will manage the farm operation financially independently and report to the Board and be in regular communication.
~Maintain the farm’s year-round appearance.
~Work alongside our Farm Educator to coordinate volunteers and education programming.
~3+ years organic, vegetable crop production. Preference for previous experience or interest in building a small scale, intensive farming operation
~Understanding of whole-farm planning, crop rotation, soil enhancement methods, and general ecological principles
~Preference is to have an education background and/or experience with farm-based education.
~Be physically capable of strenuous labor necessary to do farm and barnyard chores.
~Be comfortable working with farm animals (chickens, cows, etc)
~Have a creative and flexible approach to teaching and collaborating under changeable working conditions including heat and bad weather.
~Have experience directing / leading an educational group.
~Have excellent verbal and written communications skills.
~Pass CORI and SORI checks.
~Be First Aid Certified
