Job Description: 

The Nursery Manager leads, manages, and advances the Nursery Program and oversees all nursery operations, including, but not limited to, seed and plant management; personnel recruitment and supervision; funding acquisition; seed and plant sales; and outreach. In conjunction with the Field Operations Manager and Fleet, Equipment and Facilities Senior Coordinator, the Nursery Manager will coordinate the maintenance and repair of Nursery Program facilities, equipment and vehicles. In addition, the Nursery Manager co-manages the Native Seed Initiative, developing and managing grass, forb and shrub seed production. The Nursery Manager also assists, where appropriate, with the Stewardship Program.

The ideal candidate will possess ex situ and in situ seed and plant management program administration, operations, maintenance, and repair skills; high standards for personnel, vehicle, equipment, and facilities management; the capacity to critically assess needs and challenges and develop timely solutions; and ability to advance the Nursey Program and Native Seed Initiative using adaptive management principles. The successful candidate will be a team-oriented communicator and facilitator, who leads by example and possesses an interest in mentorship and teaching.

The Nursery and Native Seed Initiative serve critical roles as foundations of the Land Conservation Program, and the Nursery Manager is an essential part of the Conservancy’s Land Conservation Team and its ability to restore Walker Lake and conserve the Walker Basin.

Salary & Benefits
Salary range of $45,000- $65,000 with final compensation weighed heavily on experience and qualifications.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Nursery Program (80%)
• Lead, manage and advance the Nursery Program, including developing and administering the strategic/business plan, budget, and personnel
• Oversee container plant propagation and husbandry, including seed germination and stratification
• Plan weekly nursery operations to accomplish plant grow-outs for our own projects, as well as contracts
• Identify, in conjunction with other Land Conservation Managers, plant species to propagate for stewardship programs as well as sales
• Develop and evaluate enhanced plant production techniques
• Data management (e.g., seed and plant acquisition and production costs, productivity, and success)
• Coordinate maintenance and repair of nursery vehicles, tools, equipment, and facilities (e.g., irrigation and heating/cooling systems) in-house, as able, and arrange more difficult repairs with professional contractors
• Recruit, mentor, supervise, and train AmeriCorps members, staff, and volunteers
• Grant writing and funding acquisition
• Establish and administer wholesale and retail plant and seed sales
• Develop and deliver Nursery outreach and marketing programs

Native Seed Initiative (15%)
• Alongside other Land Conservation Managers, lead, manage and advance the Native Seed Initiative, including developing and administering the strategic/business plan, budget, and personnel
• Native plant materials management (e.g., acquisition, collection, harvest, bulking, cleaning, certification, accessioning, and storage)
• Establishment and development of native seed increase fields

Other Functions (5%)
• Assist with all aspects of successful stewardship programs
• Identify native and non-native flora of Nevada
• Develop a deep working knowledge of all Nursery and Native Seed Initiative vehicles, equipment and facilities/fields and Conservancy partners
• Assist the Land Conservation Director and other Managers in training employees
• Other duties as assigned by the Walker Basin Conservancy

Education & Experience: 

Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of and experience with natural resources stewardship, nursery operations, horticulture, plant

• propagation and seed management
• Relevant practical experience with a natural resource’s organization, nursery, botanic garden or farm
• Experience managing projects and people including planning, scheduling, contracting, budgeting, hiring, supervision and evaluation
• Able to think critically and creatively to develop solutions to complex nursery, stewardship and facility operations problems
• Skill to adapt and respond to unexpected or unplanned ecological (e.g., fire, freezing, drought) or programmatic (e.g., changes in organizational priorities or funding) circumstances while still progressing towards program objectives
• Capacity to integrate adaptive management principles into programs
• Understanding of the ecological and cultural communities of the Great Basin
• Familiarity with GIS and GPS applications and technologies
• Public speaking capabilities
• Degree in restoration ecology, natural resources management, ecology, biology, botany, plant science, horticulture, agronomy or similar discipline
• Ability to keep detailed records and communicate effectively with other staff and supervisors
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team to accomplish tasks
• Clean driving record and a NV State driver’s license, or ability to obtain within 1 month of hire

Physical and Mental Requirements
Strength, dexterity, coordination and vision to use tools and equipment for prolonged periods. Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit and stand for long periods. Strength and dexterity to operate small, medium and heavy equipment. Strength and stamina to endure standing and working for long periods in extreme weather conditions. Dexterity and vision to observe oncoming traffic hazards and react quickly to emergencies. Some heavy lifting (over 75 pounds) is occasionally required.

Working Conditions
Staff work in an outdoor setting with varying weather conditions, including, but not limited to: extreme heat, dry conditions, rain, snow or hail, and extreme cold. Fieldwork sites will generally be in areas with at least primitive

road access for crew vehicles. Fieldwork sites will generally not have access to potable water, restroom facilities or cellphone signals, and staff will be expected to follow Leave No Trace principals on sites without facilities. Fieldwork will frequently require hiking over rough terrain while carrying tools and equipment.

Position may occasionally be required to operate heavy machinery in hazardous environments. Environment is generally dirty, with prolonged exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, noise or odors. Frequent interruptions to planned work activities occur.
