The Namchak Retreat Ranch is located near the town of Hot Springs, Montana, on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Currently under construction, the ranch will host teachers and students coming together for longer retreats, learning, meditation, and practice in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The Namchak Retreat Ranch is also home to several permaculture systems and is dedicated to providing healthy organic produce for our guests in a regenerative way. Beyond handling all aspects of our guests' needs we are developing value-added products in alignment with our organization's ethics while working with local co-ops to provide quality and unique produce to Montana’s communities.

Schedule: 40 hours / week; 52 weeks / year
Compensation: $20 per hour
General Position Description
The Permaculture Farm Hand will play a significant support role in the overall farming operation of the Namchak Retreat Ranch. The main goal of this position is to focus on the annual plant aspect of our food forest systems, and assisting with the general upkeep of the food forest permaculture sites. We are looking for a highly self-motivated individual willing to be flexible in weekly tasks.
Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):
Assist in all aspects of the permaculture program
Focus on mixing annual plant guilds into the permaculture system
Support Permaculture Program Coordinator in implementation of food forest systems
Weeding and weed control monitoring
Assist in animal husbandry program (rotation of chicken tractor, temporarily fencing turkeys into specific areas)
Assist in installation of no-till vegetable beds
Assist in performing pest management tasks
Compost tea fertilizer prep and application
General mucking out of animal stalls
Watering new plantings
Installation of permaculture designs
Pruning, mulching, and harvesting
Assist in native and non-native plant propagation, seed collection, and landscape implementation as new buildings are constructed
● Willingness to train in permaculture principles and practices
Knowledge and interest in ecology, permaculture operations, and agricultural processes
● Knowledge of Montana's ecology – with an emphasis on plant communities
● 1-2 years of work experience in the agriculture/food production industries
● Basic knowledge of horticulture
● History of being able to work well on a team
● Able to lift 50–100 lbs.

● Heavy machinery operation (skid steers, excavators, tractors)
● Forestry experience
● Prior experience with organic farming
● Knowledge of correct pruning methods
● Knowledge of Montana’s invasive weeds
