2019 Pie Ranch Summer Internships
Pie Ranch is a working farm, an educational center, and an organization advocating for social change. Our mission is to cultivate a healthy and just food system from seed to table through food education, farmer training and regional partnerships.
Our Emerging Farmers Program is comprised of 9-month-long Apprenticeships and shorter-term Internships. The summer Internship is three month program available for people who have little or no farming experience and are interested in learning while working in a small scale production farm. We are seeking enthusiastic, hard-working, self-motivated individuals interested in changing the way they engage with the food system.
About Our Farm:
Pie Ranch is comprised of 27 acres. We are both certified organic and food justice certified. Our educational programs serve 6000+ people and our Roadside Farmstand receives over 50,000 customers each year. We see these visits as opportunities to engage the larger community in conversations about the food system. We have 10 acres under production including: annual row crops; perennial fruit trees and caneberries; pastured chickens (layers and broilers); pigs, and browsing ground for goats.
Our 2019 farm production goals include: a 24-week, 75-member Community Supported Agriculture program; growing food for our Roadside Farmstand (open 7-days a week) and onsite programs; wholesale accounts and restaurants. Our animal production will include: milking our female goats and raising bucks for meat; raising and onsite processing two rounds of meat birds (150-175 total) and three-five pastured pigs.
We are looking for enthusiastic, hard-working, self-motivated individuals interested in engaging in sustainable agriculture, food justice, and education on a farm. Interns work alongside our Apprentices in all aspects of the work week, including sowing, planting, weeding, irrigating, and harvesting a variety of crops; animal husbandry; facilitating youth and other groups; Community Supported Agriculture program and sales to bakeries & restaurants. Educational opportunities for interns beyond active learning in the field include: a weekly field walk where questions & observations are encouraged; monthly classes in sustainable agriculture & social justice.
Employment Dates/Job Responsibilities:
Interns are paid a $500 stipend/month. In addition to the stipend, interns are provided with a tent space, access to a kitchen, bathroom + shower, food grown on the farm, hands-on educational instruction, field walks, monthly classes, and the chance to live & work in a beautiful, productive environment.
Our summer internship begins June 3, 2019 and ends September 7, 2019. We request that interns stay for the entire time period.
