Position: Research & Trials Assistant
Classification: Seasonal, 40 hrs/week

To that end, each year we trial and scrupulously evaluate hundreds of different varieties of vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Only the best candidates from this process make it into our product catalogue. The Research & Trials Assistant plays a vital role in this process by supporting the research and development, quality assurance, and marketing efforts of Territorial Seed.
Position Summary:
The Research & Trials Assistant is responsible for the organization and maintenance of vegetable, flower, and herb varietal trials and quality control processes. This position reports to the Product Line Manager. The majority of time during the growing season is related to doing field-based agricultural research. This includes planting and cultivation of trials and grow-outs, taking notes and measurements, and performing evaluations of experimental varieties as well as monitoring quality control grow-outs. The Research & Trials Assistant must be capable of performing clerical duties as well as extended physical labor. Knowledge of growing a wide array of vegetables, flowers, and herbs, as well as on-farm experience is highly preferred. This position also works with other departments such as seed filling and marketing. Candidates for this position must be willing and able to be flexible and switch between roles in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
This is a unique position for the right person. The ideal candidate for this position is independently motivated, possesses exceptional organizational skills, and is comfortable working long periods of time unsupervised. The position requires a level of comfort and familiarity with both technology and computer systems, farm equipment as well as being able and willing to engage in periods of extended physical labor in a professional farm setting.
This is a 40-hour per week, seasonal position which begins in spring and continues through the end of October. There is the possibility of continuing on to work in other departments for the right individual.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Primary Duties:
Product Development / Trials Assistant (80%)
• Provides support for Research/Trials department for overall product development
o Assist in the planning, organization, seeding, planting, and cultivation of varietal trials and perform quality control grow-outs
o Assist in the evaluation and market assessment of new products and monitor for quality assurance of existing products
o Perform clerical functions utilizing record keeping systems and company software to track and record data from trials, including maintenance of databases
o Assist other staff in evaluating/visiting trials for obtaining varietal information for product descriptions, photos and training purposes
o Any additional tasks or assignments as requested by Management
o Facilitate the transmission of quality control information between departments
o Other duties as requested
Other Duties:
Marketing (10%)
• Collaborate with marketing department on content creation and special events
o On-camera informational and instructional video presenting
o Modeling for product photography
Warehouse/Seed Filling (10%)
• Assist in other departments as needed during peak seasons
o Seed Filling
o Fulfillment
o Other duties/areas as needed/assigned

Education & Experience: 

Educational Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in horticultural field, or combination of work experience preferred
• High school diploma or GED required
Required Qualifications
• Agricultural research and/or freshmarket farm work experience (1 year)
• Vegetable, Flower, Herb gardening experience (2 years)
• Basic computer literacy
• Outstanding attention to detail, organizational skills & accuracy
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to pass background check
Desired Qualifications
• Basic knowledge of freshmarket vegetable, flower, and herb botanical characteristics and traits
• Experience with produce handling and sales, eg., grocery store produce department, farmer’s market.
• Experience on farm field crew
• Experience using tractors and other mechanical farm equipment
• Experience with database software applications
Physical Requirements
• Must be able to work in all weather conditions
• Must be able to lift and move heavy seed containers or equipment up to 50 lbs
• Average 5-7 walking miles a day over uneven terrain
