This position is at the Boston YMCA boys and girls’ camps which are collocated on beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee in Tuftonboro, NH. The chosen applicant will direct camper-based gardening activities at the Camps’ Garden Center which currently includes nine 4’ X 16’ raised bed gardens. The Garden Coordinator will be in charge of all vegetable care and camper gardening activities.
Job Timeline: May 14 – Sept 25, 2022
May 14-June 18: Pre-season garden work / garden setup and special event staffing
June 19-25: all-staff training week
June 26-August 27: Camp is in session!
August 28-September 25: Postseason garden work / garden closedown and special event staffing
Mid-October: Garden closedown final work weekend
There is slight flexibility with start and end dates. We can try to work with your schedule!
Compensation: Weekly stipend, on-site camp housing on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, and all meals provided.
The Garden Coordinator will run up to four 50-minute gardening activities/education programs per day. Each 50-minute activity will involve 8-12 campers between ages 8-16. The Garden Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining the garden, harvesting produce, and replanting when necessary. The Garden Coordinator will work closely with our Farm-to-Fork cooking counselor and provide produce/herbs to be used in the cooking activities. The Garden Coordinator will also communicate with our kitchen staff and provide produce/herbs for use in our dining hall when available/needed.
The ideal candidate will be pursuing or have a degree in sustainable agriculture using organic growing techniques, or extensive work experience in this area. The ideal candidate will have the following skills/experience:
1-2 years of experience working with raised bed gardens
Ability to work with staff and children
Previous camp experience and teaching abilities
21+ in age (preferred, but not required)
Experience working with low/high tunnels, large propagation knowledge
Knowledge of different cultivating techniques
Enthusiasm for sustainability and local food systems
