To coordinate the development, implementation, management, and evaluation of the Austin Community College (ACC) Sustainable Student Farm at the ACC Elgin Campus. The Farm Manager will develop and manage all aspects of the ACC Sustainable Student Farm production fields including growing organic vegetables, fruits and herbs; identifying and selling in local markets and on-site; managing farm interns and working with volunteers; and speaking to public groups that frequent the farm for educational days.

This position requires a strong, practical knowledge of agricultural skills and farm management, and a passionate commitment to sustainable agriculture and local food access. The manager has primary responsibility for the planning, coordination and implementation of all work and activities at the ACC Sustainable Student Farm. The ACC Sustainable Student Farm currently has 1 acre in organic vegetable production, one acre fruit orchard, and 15 acres in pasture for a small herd of St. Croix/Dorper sheep with potential to add much more.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Oversees all operations and functioning of the ACC Campus farm; maintains farm records; works with instructors.

Coordinates the development and implementation of the ACC Campus Farm including maintaining detailed farm records, including soil sample results, inputs, crop rotation, and organic fungal and pest treatments used.

Establishes and maintains communication with administration, faculty, maintenance workers regarding the build out and ongoing development of the ACC Campus Farm; purchases all farm supplies and seeds.

Ensures seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other supplies are regularly restocked.

Analyzes existing operations, crops, livestock, staff, and financial documents and recommends improvements.

Prepares plans and schedules for planting and harvesting and ensures farm staff understands expectations.

Performs insect and weed control, fertility monitoring, and general field observation.

Performs cultivation activities, irrigation planning and implementation, and manages soil building program including composting.

Scheduling repairs, maintenance, and replacement of equipment and machinery.

Manages the marketing and sale of products produced on the farm such as fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, and grain.
Assists with the recruitment and training of new staff members.

Collaborates with the Department Chair to prepare budgets and financial reports.

Works in collaboration with area farmers to facilitate learning trips and on-farm training days.

Supervises farm interns and volunteers with patience and respect.

Facilitates the organic certification of the ACC Campus Farm.

Collaborates closely with other programs and activities related to the regional food system, and in the city of Elgin.

Builds professional networks and stays abreast of developments in agricultural science.

Supervises, trains, coaches, directs, coordinates, and disciplines personnel while adhering to organizational human resource policies and procedures as well as related employment laws.

Recommends hire and termination personnel actions for positions supervised.

Education & Experience: 

Required Education
Associate degree.

Preferred Education
Bachelor's degree in Agriculture Science or closely related field.

Required Work Experience
Two years related work experience.

Preferred Work Experience
Experience working in a team environment with proven leadership skills.
Passion for Agriculture.
Management experience would be a plus.
Experience in growing using organic/biodynamic principles.
Experience working with farm machinery; Basic carpentry skills.
Self-motivated, cooperative and flexible.
