We thrive on empowering people to grow their own food no matter how big or small their space. Through our garden care and mentoring program we provide expert garden maintenance and education, helping connect people to their food and inspire local food production in Marin County. We are a small team of farmers and landscape designers who care deeply about food, community, and the environment. We develop close relationships with our clients, and are looking for someone we can trust to nurture those relationships further. We value a fun and supportive work environment, even though we mostly work solo, we stay in touch via email, phone, zoom, and occasional in-person visits/meetings.
Location: Applicant should be based near and able to get easily to Marin County.
Compensation: $20-$25/hr depending on experience.
Work: Part-time - 2-3 days a week to start, roughly 15-20 hours/week to start (with likely possibility to increase)
We need an Urban Farmer ready to join our expanding backyard farm program. Our Urban Farmer will be responsible for the maintenance of our clients’ gardens, ensuring that they are beautiful and productive. The Urban Farmer will work independently, driving from garden to garden, to perform all necessary garden tasks, and is supported by our other wonderful Farmers and Farm Mentors. The position requires full-season farming in multiple locations throughout Marin County with an emphasis on supporting, inspiring and empowering families to successfully grow, harvest and preserve food in their home environment.
Understand soil health - soil sampling and sending for analysis, and amending soil
Seeding, planting, weeding, pruning, harvesting, applying organic pest and disease control practices.
Trellising, irrigation repair and management.
Ensuring the area in and around the garden is neat and well maintained.
Manage client scheduling and communication including sending recap email
Plan each visit and purchase plants/materials necessary.
Design seasonal succession plans and garden maps for each client
Track expenses for each client.
Take photos of gardens for Social Media
Teach homeowners and children how to garden during visits.
Send follow-up emails with homework and harvest list for clients
Answer gardening questions posed by clients on email or phone.
Minimum of 2 years experience growing vegetables – preferably commercial/market farming in this climate, and experience with: Planning, planting out and sowing, fertilizing, pest and disease ID and treatment, harvesting, and rotation/succession planning techniques
Must have a valid CA drivers license, clean DMV record, a working cell phone and appropriate work attire.
Applicant needs to have their own vehicle they can use to transport themselves to job sites and for collecting plants and supplies, as necessary.
To be able to lift and carry heavy awkward loads up to 50lbs and perform repetitive physical tasks.
The ability to think on your feet and come up with solutions to common garden issues on the spot without immediate assistance.
Confident and a great communicator with clients and the team.
Great organization skills and attention to detail.
Desire and commitment to learn and follow through on research on urban food production
Upbeat and positive ‘can do’ attitude.
Excited about growing food and sharing that knowledge and wisdom with adults and children.
Ability to self-organize, and capable of overseeing multiple gardens at once.
Being able to work alone or with a small team of 2-3 people.
A desire to grow and become part of a passionate company for the long-term.
We are seeking someone who is willing to commit to a minimum of 6 months to 1 year, following a 1 month trial period.
Experience in teaching hands-on skill-building workshops (desirable).
Knowledge and experience with cooking and food preservation a plus.
