Job Description: 

The Whidbey Institute it looking for a Westgarden intern for 3-6 months to assist and learn from our Westgarden Steward. Jules LeDrew is a clinical herbalist and holds a premed degree in Herbal Science from Bastyr University.

The Westgarden, established in 1979, is a half-acre medicinal herb and vegetable garden on the Whidbey Institute grounds. The scope of the Westgarden is broad, and has three main areas of focus: organic medicine and food production; community education and volunteer engagement; and healing experience.

  leading volunteers, and making executive decisions related to plants

*Thursday garden lunches 
*Fresh produce during harvest season
*Access to greenhouse for growing your own starts

Both part-time and full-time positions considered, depending on experience and scheduling needs.
We offer camping on the land and use of a bathroom, shower, and outdoor kitchen as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

*Helping with seasonal cultivation for medicinal, native plant, and food gardens
*General garden maintenance (weeding, mulching, mowing, composting)
*Leading volunteer garden work parties
*Medicinal herb efficacy
*Learning about local Pacific Northwest ecosystems 
*Running a volunteer day
*Helping lead an educational day/ weekend

Education & Experience: 

Previous farming, gardening, or landscaping work are a plus, however we are considering all applicants, regardless of previous experience.
We ask that applicants be willing and available to learn and try new things, be physically able to work outside for multiple hours at a time, and be curious and open to the garden, education, and the mission of the Whidbey Institute: to nurture the conditions for transformational learning, and our purpose is to grow the human capacity to respond generatively to the challenges of our time in service to a future in which people and planet thrive together.
