Overview of CalCAN:
CalCAN is a statewide coalition that advances state and federal policy to realize the powerful climate solutions offered by sustainable and organic agriculture. We seek a widespread transition in California agriculture towards increasingly resilient and environmentally sound farming systems that provide climate benefits, protect our natural resources, sustain our food security, provide for economically vibrant agricultural communities and maintain our finite agricultural lands. Our work, in collaboration with coalition partners, has contributed to the adoption of multiple state climate-smart agriculture programs, farmland conservation policy, and on-farm renewable energy advancements.

CalCAN currently has four full-time staff, a lobbyist, internship positions, and a wide network of partners and advisors across the state. We are embarking on an effort to increase our impact by expanding our network of partners. Campaign Organizer Role:
The Campaign Organizer will play an important role in expanding CalCAN's capacity to build a wider network of farmer and rancher, membership organization and business partners in key legislative districts throughout California as a strategy to increase our influence on sustainable agriculture and climate policy. The ideal candidate will be committed to sustainable agriculture, with a demonstrated interest in using policy, organizing and campaigning to effect systems change. The Campaign Organizer must be willing to occasionally work on weekends and evenings and travel regularly throughout the state, with overnight travel averaging twice per month.

This is a full time salaried position that is competitive and commensurate with experience in the salary range of $55,000 - $65,000. The position can be based in either Sebastopol or Sacramento, CA.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

The Campaign Organizer will work under the supervision of CalCAN's Executive Director, as well as in collaboration with our policy team, to identify target districts and campaign needs. The Campaign Organizer will be responsible for developing and cultivating relationships and coordinating the mobilization of partners willing to take action on CalCAN campaigns.

Duties will include:
• Plan, coordinate, and implement district-level tactics (e.g., sign on letters, meetings with policymakers, in-district events, media)
• Recruit new CalCAN partners
• Support partners in their contacts with policymakers and the press
• Collaborate with CalCAN staff as needed on the development of campaign strategy, communications materials, events, fundraising and administrative tasks
• Help produce earned media in the form of letters to the editor, op-eds and press coverage

Education & Experience: 

• Demonstrated interest in and familiarity with sustainable agriculture and/or climate change
• Minimum of two years of experience in campaign, organizing and/or advocacy work
• Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to working collaboratively with a wide, diverse range of partners and colleagues
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills
• Detail-oriented and highly organized with strong time management skills and the ability to stay on deadline while managing multiple projects
• Experience with a variety of applications and tools such as Google Apps, Microsoft Office, etc. and contact management system software such as Salesforce, MailChimp or Constant Contact
• Self-directed, entrepreneurial and collaborative work style
• Access to a personal vehicle and possession of a valid driver's license
